But the Sun is tiny compared to the solar system which is tiny compared to the distance to the next star. Oh, did we mention that there are over 100 billion stars in our galaxy (which is about 100,000 light years in diameter) which is one of hundreds of billions of galaxies in just the observable universe (which might be infinite for all we know). Don't feel small. We find it liberating. Your everyday human stresses are nothing compared to this enormity that we are a part of. Enjoy the fact that we get to be part of this vastness! About Khan Academy: Khan Academy offers practice exercises, instructional videos, and a personalized learning dashboard that empower learners to study at their own pace in and outside of the classroom. We tackle math, science, computer programming, history, art history, economics, and more. Our math missions guide learners from kindergarten to calculus using state-of-the-art, adaptive technology that identifies strengths and learning gaps. We've also partnered with institutions like NASA, The Museum of Modern Art, The California Academy of Sciences, and MIT to offer specialized content. For free. For everyone. Forever. #YouCanLearnAnything Subscribe to Khan Academy’s Cosmology & Astronomy channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UChNPnEkW8LYZ5Rwi8_A2-DA?sub_confirmation=1 Subscribe to Khan Academy: https://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=khanacademy

great video!! finally i understand quasars better
-
Actually, the first quasar (3C 48) discovered in 1960 was detected by its radio emission first, not visually--so yes, quasars are radio sources. Quasar CTA-102 (which inspired a Russian hypothesis about a possible SETI source, a 1960s pop song by the Byrds, and a fanciful alien space trade map drawn by UFO royalty's Betty and Barney Hill under hypnosis) is a radio source, too, to mention a famous one.

This video is awesomely unique. It gives out something more specific.
-
This video is great, you've really simplified the concept of quasars for me. Thanks!
-
aren't black holes round like a rubber ball?
-
Excellent explanation of Quasars which I always found bizarre. Different subject than this but since there is no way to know what is actually inside a black hole, can't assume it's a singularity. All the energy of a black hole is in proportion to it's surface area, not it's volume. If things actually do go into a black hole, some properties are stripped by the event horizon before passing inside and that includes some of the object's dimensions. Susskind has some excellent lectures on youtube about the Hologram effect.

FYI, the jets are most likely produced by the strong magnetic field that is produced by the accretion disk. These fields then shoot the particles parallel to the disk's rotation axis.

if someone could aim a quasar at a planet could it destroy said planet?
-
oh i wish i was into this when i was in school - i think about [everything space] all the time
-
It's not consumed but ejected. The amount of energy ejected by the brightest quasar, if converted to mass, would equal 10Earths/second
-
this is actually the best explanation I ever heard about this stuff. you just made my day, sal. thank you!
-
Quasars are active black holes, meaning the black hole is actually devouring the matter around it. When the matter starts to get backed up, swirling really fast around the event horizon, it starts to collide and release large amounts of energy and light creating an accretion disk. Scientist believe there is a black hole at the center of our galaxy, but it is not active so matter just spirals around it not really falling in; at least not in large amounts.

I eat Baked Beans yet I release gas

Thumbs up if you watch this to know more about black holes than Divide Et Impera!
-
Wait, Quasars are just light right? But u said that the brightest known quasar consumes 10Earths/second.
-
beautiful explanation with the help of diagrams...really helps.
-
Was lying in bed, couldn't sleep..wondered what Quasars were...now I know!! Thank you, good night!

Your thinking in terms of mass. balckholes, white holes and time do not operate on the level of Mass/Matter they are of radiation/energy/frequency. Your energy can most certainly travel through. But first you need to broaden your mind. energy equals life dot com
-
Black holes, sure, a doorway to another dimension that will completely rip you to sheds under its crushing gravity. I think ill stay away from them...
-
Quasars and black holes are the doorways to other dimensions You can move through time it just depends on your state of mind You first need to realize on what plain we actually exist read this energy equals life dot com Nobody actually understands what Einstein was saying They teach it all backwards Time does not "Dilate" look at the meaning of that word Time travel variates and synchronizes for each thing in its dimension
