This game looks great. Did you ever figure out the electricity?

A few tips after playing for about 3 hours:
Make 4 fleets autonomous at the beginning and assign them to each border (when autonomous they create squads on their own as needed)
Make one or two primary offensive fleets
Make one or two rapid response fleets to mop up pirates/rebels/etc.
Use chemical bombs on hivers (sparingly) aim to attack their homeworld and kill the overmind, only if you can reach it and it's not too far away
Attack the parasites as soon as they go into hibernation, they have numbers but are week (around 100 or so ships should be enough)
When parasites are awake, play defense shoring up your borders -
To send multiple squadrons just click RMB on the destination planet and all squadrons you have not unselected will be sent there.

It's a lot like Empire of the Fading Suns from what I've seen
-
Electricity is tied to refineries (from the Industry help screen @ 24:04). The gas resource which you get off your planets is refined and turned into usable energy.
