Pink Floyd's "Astronomy Domine" released on their debut album The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn on August 5, 1967. It was written by original founder Syd Barrett and co-sung by keyboardist Richard Wright. The voice at the beginning was their manager Peter Jenner who is reading the names of the planets through a megaphone. Hailed as one of the best psychedelic albums of the 60s it fared better in the UK reaching #6 on the album chart where it was released on EMI Columbia Records. In the US part of the tepid reception was due to Capitol Record's releasing it on their smaller subsidiary Tower Records and not yet being well-known in the US. Capitol didn't have the faith in the album that EMI Columbia in the UK had. It has since been recognized in the US as a significant album and represents not only Pink Floyd's musical progression, but also Syd Barrett's initial influence as he wrote most of the songs on the album. PF was formed in 1965 by Syd Barrett, Roger Waters, Nick Mason, and Richard Wright. David Gilmour joined in January 1968 as Syd's mental condition deteriorated; Syd left the band later in '68. Artist Isaac Abrams, whose paintings are in this video, is a "self-taught artist who opened his first gallery of Psychedelic Art in the world in 1965." His painting "Cosmoerotica," the second one in the video, is from 1968. The rest of the paintings in the video were created from 2005-2008. Isaac is from upstate New York and currently resides in Saugerties, NY which has a vibrant artist community. His paintings are available for purchase as well. I feel there is a sense of movement in these paintings and thus 'warped' them to give that feel; I think they go well with the song too. To quote a bio found here: http://www.rogallery.com/abrams_isaac/abrams-bio.html "He begins his work with a series of loosely conceived juxtapositions and then discovers in those juxtapositions the metaphysical and cosmic concepts which are so often expressed in his art. His works are sudden leaps into unknown spaces, into free-floating gravityless existences, where angels and demons, concepts and conceptions appear and disappear, where paradoxes proliferate and where each viewing of the painting may bring to the viewer a new and different cross combination of the elements within. His intentions are to create a painting viewable at any distance from inches to yards or dozens of yards; a piece having a vital life which is not dependent on a single point of view or a single conception of what was within." http://www.isaacabrams.com/ Someone did a video of Isaac's art in a gallery so you can see how large and striking these paintings are. I wish I could buy them! http://youtu.be/kQ_6rAHdshc The material used in this video is being used for without profit for purposes such as music history, criticism, and commentary.
