Not sure what the relationship was between Sludge and Slash Vohaul, but the latter was at least mentioned in the first game; he left that note in the data cartridge.
He was probably the guy who gave Roger the access code to that data cartridge, come to think of it. -
Loving that you're playing this. Thanks again, we had a lot of fun "Re-Making" it.

Thanks for the series. I've played thoroughly only the fifth one, and boy these games are creepy (sorta). Gonna try out police quest.

The original game cam with a red view finder and a secret message card that you needed the red filter to read in order to finish the game so you had to by the game

Dear god that water glitch. Cause he was raised up and swimming where there was supposed to be land.

I can't wait till Paul plays Leisure Suit Larry 4: The Lost Floppies :D

As other commentators have said, Sierra games make it incredibly easy to get stuck. One of the King's Quest games, infamously, has an action you need to take early-on (with a time limit) that if you fail to do gets you killed hours later, with no obvious connection between the two (that is, it's not clear that doing this thing early on would've helped you later, even after you've been killed).
Given that, I'd strongly suggest never overwriting a save, and saving often, or at least seeing if you can find a walkthrough that warns about actions that can kill you. -
The problem with getting Roger to throw the spore at the predator may have been because the spore needs to hit the ground, not the beast. Though, if the game was made using AGS, the pixel-perfect detection could also be an issue (AGS, as far as I know, doesn't have a way to choose a better mask, so thin objects tend to be hard to click on).
So far, it looks like the most annoying parts are all from the original (like the deep part of the swamp). They did ease some things though, like not having to figure out which direction to climb off the log after it breaks off. The Dragon's Lair style swinging was arguably worse in the original too. That part in particular bugs me due to its misrepresentation of pendulum physics (the least helpful part of the swing in real life is the part where the rope stops, due to the lack of momentum). Then again, that's something most video games with swinging are guilty of. -

You can very much get stuck in a Sierra game. Both King's Quest and Space Quest have numerous points where, if you don't have the right things, you're basically screwed. Sometimes they'll have alternate solutions for puzzles, but there's still a lot of places you can get screwed.

That was fun. Lots of frustrating parts in this stretch of the game. The cave at the end reminds me of the one in the TNG episode 'Final Mission'.

Re: Sierra and not getting stuck.
Oh HELL no. Sierra games were NOTORIOUS for stranding you. It was one of their many flaws, mitigated only by the ability to have multiple saves.
I remember being stuck where you were (no glowing gem) for a very long time before I stumbled upon the deep part of the swamp. Other games were even worse, like Leisure Suit Larry 2. -
OH! So this game was the origin of the joke "Put Gem in Mouth"
