Off Grid Living: Solar Battery Storage
About | Information | History | Online | Facts | Discovery
Back to basics. When we moved off grid it was very difficult to get goo device! Even the solar books were limited. So alot of what we did was living and learning. One area that is always overlooked and no one talks about it HOW DO YOU STORE your solar batteries? Do you stack them, do you line them up, how do you line them up, can they be on the floor, inside or outside???? We made the mistake of building a nice looking shelf to conserve space not knowing this would be very inconvenient when trying to CHECK our batteries specific gravity and water level!! So BACK to basics! One for the library to keep in mind BEFORE you go off grid!!

How did you find out the "hard way" that you "need" to ventilate? Hydrogen has NO smell. Do you people even do any reading? If you smell anything it's NOT Hydrogen. It's 14x lighter than air. It will escape without your help. The amount of H that's generated is not worth worrying about. You're a bit of an alarmist. It would take an ENORMOUS concentration of H to explode given a spark.

elon musk's Power wall battery is 6.4kWh for $3000. The average home on grid uses 30kWh per day, one power wall won't make 30/6.4= 4.6 batteries required or $15,000 in batteries. These make less power every charge/discharge cycle and depending on how fa down you draw these will have a bearing on life expectancy. Typically drawing below 20% shortens life immeasurably, so from the above add 20% or $18.000 in batteries. If these last 1000 cycles, unlikely, you are spending $18/cycle or day? For batteries. never mind whether you have any trouble, defects, over or under charge and reduce their life expectancy. This is a simple explanation, the real story is far far far more complex and living off grid with solar and batteries.....start your diesel generator or live like a caveman.

One of the most important things for a large battery bank is to try to arrange it in series.
Series is vastly more efficient than parallel. Charging performance is much better.
Best batteries are Industrial type forklift batteries, manlift batteries etc.
Until somebody comes up with a lithium ion type that is price competitive, the best solution is still lead acid. AGM batteries will usually dry fail in 3 or 4 years. -
too much excess cable on batteries, connect fan switch to a thermo sensor on the charge controller. you should have asked an electeical engineer not morons on the internet, i would have told you how to design this. instead of storing energy or overcharging your batteries, get a big hotwater tank and use it as a thermal sink.

Thankyou your awsome at covering all bases, please keep telling us the up and down of living off the grid.. I would love to live this way one day.. We have a farm and this would be very hard to get power to all the buildings we have... My thought would be to just sell and downsize.. But for my he loves the farm.. ??????

I'm a 30 year electrician. Also have degree in electronics technology. You have some problem with your design.if your button fan has a permanent magnet motor in it it will have brushes. These brushes cause micro sparking. Your air as hydrogen and oxygen mixture. Please make sure you have a brushless motor. A boat bilge fresh air motor I believe is explosionproof would make a better Choice. Be safe have some fun make that powerTodd in Chicago

Best battery? Refurbished Fork lift Batteries You need heavy equipment to move them but totally awesome. You cannot smell hydrogen gas it is odorless. You are smelling h2S. Massive capacity and they are rugged! Electric Fork lifts move up to 5000 lbs all day long
-
hydrogen is extremely light, go straight to ceiling, not much problem...oxygen is heavier, falls to ground, that is extremely explosive...

What if you buy that FLAT wallmount TESLA battery ? still need being watered and checked all the time ?
-
giant power .com
maintenance free ( life of battery will last longer 25 year) -
You should try a battery wall using 18650 batterys .

After seeing your video I am getting the impression that someone unseen is making it difficult for us poor folks to figure this out. I was forced to retired because of medical complications and electricity seems to take a bite out of the money available. I just wanted to know ho get a 100 watts system going to supply electricity during the day.

I am glad you guys discovered this and shared this information because this is the first I am hearing about the venting issue. No one ever talks about it.

awesome battery storage, i like the fan , thank you for the video.

Starry is going to need our help, she has been in a bad accident. Details are here: https://www.gofundme.com/starryhilder
A GoFundMe page was started on her behalf. Even $1 would go a long way to help her during this crisis in her and her family's life. I created an email address that I will share with Starry and her family, they will receive 100% of the proceeds by using this address. I have listed the address at the hospital where you can send cards or care packages on the GoFundMe page if you prefer send something through the mail, just so everything is in one central location. Starry has a daytime job as a nurse and needs our support to help with bills and running her homestead while she is recovering. As you all know she also contributes immensely to her homestead's upkeep and her contribution will be missed. If everyone donates only $1 it will go a long way to help her keep things running.
If you can't donate but still want to help, here is a poster you can print and share: http://tinyurl.com/j988m54
Here is a link to an update video she posted yesterday: https://youtu.be/4Til0Cj-yKc
Thank you for anything you can do to help. -
Have you experienced excessive cold temperature in the winter from your vent system? Or, is the cooler temperature in the battery box not a big deal in the winter. Also in my opinion I think you need another small intake vent on the other side of the batt box, it will even out the airflow preventing A-symmetrical air flow.

Not to be rude but you really need to have someone spell check for you. Your videos are filled with spelling errors.

Wow do people really not know this stuff already? YES battery's let off explosive gasses. YES temperature extremes affect charge state. No building them into a area with restricted access is not a good idea. Unless you buy maintenance free battery's then HELLO Maintenance will be required.

Lead acid batteries should NEVER, EVER be left on a concrete floor, she is definitely right about that. Hydrogen gas is highly explosive.
