For reference, Curiosity weighs 2,000 lbs. The last two rovers, Spirit and Opportunity, weighed about 400 lbs. The "beachball" wasn't a viable solution this time around.

Very cool video!!! So I have a question, do they take the rover on a test run before they actually ship it off to Mars? They must right......? I mean, like drive it around and make sure all the instruments work.....?

When the other two, spirit and opportunity landed safely they were in these big balloons which bounced, stopped, then deflated releasing the robots. If that worked so well they don't they use it again ? Using boosters to slowly descend is far too complicated when you can't be sure of the weather, dust storms etc... i will chuffed if it lands safely but not surprised if this robot is added to the list of landers that crashed !

What happens if this system fails? I'm pretty sure they could have come up with a better way to land inside the targe area.

2:08 and then the parachute falls onto the rover, entangling it in it's ropes.
