Never Seen Before! Shocking Video of Space Shuttle Challenger STS-51L Debris!
About | Information | History | Online | Facts | Discovery
Rare, never before seen video footage of the the debris recovery of Space Shuttle Challenger STS-51L. Two months after the space shuttle accident, the crew cabin from Challenger was found at the bottom of the ocean floor, intact. This is actual video footage from the recovery of the Challenger debris. Challenger was destroyed 73 seconds after lift-off on January 28, 1986 when an O-ring failure in the right solid rocket booster caused hot gases and flame to breach and ignite the main fuel tank containing liquid oxygen and liquid hydrogen. All of this was on network news shortly after it happened. Nothing new here.

I was at Patrick Air Force Base the day the Challenger blew up. I was giving a training course on base and we broke for lunch. I recall that it was extremely cold that day. When we arrived at the NCO club on highway A1A which was close to the beach, we looked up and saw the Shuttle heading up, and then we saw what we mistook for the SRBs falling off. It was so cold that we turned and headed on towards the entrance to the club, and then someone else in the parking lot yelled, "It blew up! The Shuttle blew up!" We stopped dead in our tracks and looked back at the Shuttle. Then we realized that there indeed had been an explosion. Ruined our day to say the least. The Cape laid off 2,400 people for a couple of years and the economic impact on that area of Florida was devastating. Restaurants were closing and the housing market tanked. Later that night I spent a few hours at Jetty Park in Cape Canaveral looking out to sea and wondering if they would ever find the bodies. Some tiles from the Shuttle washed ashore, and news began to come in that recovery boats were trying to locate parts of the Shuttle. I never saw this video, so thanks for posting it. The whole sad experience seems still fresh in my mind.

Don't be a liar, there's no "intact" crew cabin in your "shocking" video!!! Maybe you could have added "terror" so you can increase your rate view. Liar.

Actually the crew cabin was found the same day on the sea floor.
I recall seeing it once on the news on that day of the announcement.

I knew one of the NASA technicians involved in the Shuttle program during the disaster. From what he told me, they had recovered the entire crew cabin "intact". Some of the astronauts showed signs of being conscious after the blast, but died on impact with the water. He claimed the bodies were transported from the scene in 55 gallon drums (after they were removed from their seats) because they wanted to avoid media scrutiny. I believe him because he was the "real deal". But who knows?

Actually, it is said that astronauts were still alive after the explosion. In the debris some people found that oxygen masks and other things were not where they were supposed to be, so that means than they were probably used during the descent... (I don"t remember where I read about this, I would love to find it again)
So sad for these guys... -
I never knew that any of the shuttle had been recovered.
