How did Neil deGrasse Tyson get hooked on science? Find out when the director of the Hayden Planetarium and host of StarTalk Radio answers a fan's question on how to become an astrophysicist. Plus, Neil answers comic co-host Chuck Nice's question about how to develop a love of science and physics before it's too late! Enjoy this StarTalk Radio "Behind the Scenes" video, which was shot the same day as we recorded our episode, "Cosmic Queries: Time-Keeping." Oh boy, I thought the guy at the right was Tyson himself, when the video begins...

A few months ago I loved physics, astrophysics and astronomy to bits but then I sort of just stopped doing it for a while because there was too much homework to do and now I'm not as interested but I wish that I was. I still love astronomy but I really want to be interested in physics again. Do you think that if I just give physics another go I'll love it again?

''Maths is the language of the universe' I got a brain orgasm he said that
-
I love math but I hate how school gives us a new concept every day and expects me to get it in that day before moving on and being tested on it.
-
how many years of studying astrophysics you should take before becoming an astrophysicist
-
I wonder if 30 is too old to be an astrophysicist
-
This is interesting, to say the least. Everything takes time and patience.

As someone who loves space and plans to be somebody like Neil deGrasse Tyson I see the world very differently. I see the Earth as a spaceship. This is special feeling to be part of the Universe.

The type of blacks that the news never shows

For me, math is the issue. I would pursue a physics related major in college, but the math is what always held me back. Growing up, I always got A's in my science classes, and I still do in college. But Math always has been my worst subject. Nothing ever made math "click" for me, and I always felt like I was working harder than everyone in the class just to get an okay grade. It sucks, because I do have a passion for science.

hi i have a question. Ever since i little ive always had an interest in the universe. I want to be an astronomer. my question is what is the difference between astrophysicist and astronomer. also, I would love to be an astronaut. I was thinking with astronomy, it could help me get in as an astronaut but looking at the requirements at NASA and it says that they look for people in a higher level in degree for engineering, biological science, physical science, or mathematics. in order for me to become an astronaut, should i consider these, will astronomy help me get in or no?

It's a shame I've never found the "Rosetta stone" that will translate the language of the universe to me. I love science, I especially love astrophysics. But it might as well be "magic" as I suffer from dyscalculia. I fear I'll never comprehend the math, but the concepts I'll forever cherish thanks to science communicators like Neil degrass Tyson.
It's like listening to a sermon from a great preacher. It's not just about the science, but the way he motivates you to want to learn. It's also how he makes you feel connected to the great minds of the past, and even the universe it self. It's clear how much Carl Sagan influenced him. They are like the Mr. Rogers of spacetime. :D -
I think this is my favorite video on YouTube.
So encouraging. -
My Grandad got me into science when I was three. He would teach me about the stars and the world around me and since then I've been hooked! I told him today that I'm aiming to become an astrophysicist and the look on his face was all the encouragement I needed :)

I barely graduate high school in 2012. At that time, science and math bored the Hell out of me. Something clicked about a year and a half ago, and now I am in love with them. I wish I had found this love while I was in high school. I'll be 4 years behind in my life when I start college this Fall as a 22 year old. I too wish to become an astrophysicist, or at the very least, something related to studying space.
Better late than never, I suppose. -
I have a question and I really do hope someone answers. I have very limited choices in regards to where to study so as to pursue a career in astrophysics- the only colleges I can go to offer "applied physics" as a major rather than pure physics. If I do my best to take as many math-intensive classes as I can, as well as programming and astronomy courses, will I be able to get into grad school for a degree in astrophysics? Or is it only possible if I get a bachelor's in physics rather than applied physics.
I'm very afraid of choosing applied physics as my major and then realising when applying for grad schools that that is not what they want. The major difference is that it focuses more on the practical applications of physics rather than theories, and has some engineering courses thrown in there (ie: calculus II for engineers, differential equations for engineers...). I'm also planning to do research during summers. Do I have a chance?? -
I LOVE ASTROPHYSICS! but Really i try my best as physics but never get it.

This is so great to hear, being a high schooler aspiring to learn more about astronomy and ultimately become an astrophysicist. With the hope of working on the International Space Station.

I'm 13 and want to become an Astrophysicist.
