Mars is the focus of much speculation and scientific study about possible human colonization. Its surface conditions and the likely presence of water on Mars make it arguably the most hospitable of the planets, other than Earth. Mars requires less energy per unit mass (delta-v) to reach from Earth than any planet except Venus. However, at minimum energy use, a trip to Mars requires 6–7 months in space using current chemical spacecraft propulsion methods. Mars Direct is a proposal for a human mission to Mars that is designed to be both cost-effective and possible with current technology. It was originally detailed in a research paper by NASA engineers Robert Zubrin and David Baker in 1990, and later expanded upon in Zubrin's 1996 book The Case for Mars. It now serves as a staple of Zubrin's speaking engagements and general advocacy as head of the Mars Society, an organization devoted to the colonization of Mars. On July 20, 1989, George H. W. Bush – then President of the United States – announced plans for what came to be known as the Space Exploration Initiative (SEI). In a speech on the steps of the National Air and Space Museum he described long-term plans which would culminate in a manned mission to the surface of Mars. By December 1990, a study to estimate the project's cost de

It's either space, or no long term future for the human race. It's that simple. The question is whether we care about our descendents and our continuing legacy, and whether or not we want to enable ourselves to be more significant than a breif blip in the darkness. humanity ought to be inspired to work together to reach for a greater goal.

Why Mars? Maybe we should save the Earth instead of going so far away... We meed to save our planet first...

I really like Robert Zubrin's thought...."grow or decay". It is so true! It amazes and saddens me that we would spend an obscene amount of money in WAR, but only 1% of the national budget on space exploration.

Whatever it is mankind must go there first.

without a proper strength of magnetic field around the planet, it's imposible to maintain the atmosphere...

Mars is the future home for HUMANITY

I'm all for it. Right now we're spending billions of tax dollars for NASA for doing absolutely nothing, or nothing useful anyways. So if we already have to blow our hard earned, i say let's spend it on something like this, a project that could maybe finally bring some unity among people rather than killing each other all over the world. At least that's how i feel about it. I mean the price for only one of those new aircraft carriers the feds are having built, will cover a manned mission to Mars.

Stupid...If you want to go to Mars...go alone and spend your own money...

The reason they won't implicate it is because we never went to the moon we never have left lower earth orbit. Have to figure how to get past the van Allen belts because no one can survive the passing of them due to the radiation. Get real people nasa stole all our money for a Hollywood movie they showed us. NASA will tell you that they can't get past the belts so if we can't do it now we couldn't have done it in 1969

So mars have water? OMG!!!

This fuel method is the same SpaceX is planning to use.

What a joke. Humans don't deserve to occupy another planet. The reasons are far too many to even start mentioning.
