NASA | Earth at Night
About | Information | History | Online | Facts | Discovery
In daylight our big blue marble is all land, oceans and clouds. But the night - is electric. This view of Earth at night is a cloud-free view from space as acquired by the Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership Satellite (Suomi NPP). A joint program by NASA and NOAA, Suomi NPP captured this nighttime image by the satellite's Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS). The day-night band on VIIRS detects light in a range of wavelengths from green to near infrared and uses filtering techniques to observe signals such as city lights, gas flares, and wildfires. This new image is a composite of data acquired over nine days in April and thirteen days in October 2012. It took 312 satellite orbits and 2.5 terabytes of data to get a clear shot of every parcel of land surface. This video uses the Earth at night view created by NASA's Earth Observatory with data processed by NOAA's National Geophysical Data Center and combined with a version of the Earth Observatory's Blue Marble: Next Generation. http://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/NightLights This video is public domain and can be downloaded at: http://svs.gsfc.nasa.gov/goto?11157 Like our videos? AMAZING

Very Informative video :-)

0:59 Egypt so nice
-
NASA Company've seen much of the night and made this the secret so that people do not believe in God if published this mystery was good for you, but the torment of Allah is severe in the Day of Judgment
-
look at the deep black of universe ...filed with stars??
-
100% CGI..100% FAKE...100% BS...100% CRIMINAL. So sad that poor NASA on the 20 Billion they rob us for EVERY year any afford a $400 HD Camera to strap on to a satellite and give us real footage instead of "animations." 😏
-
its beautiful at night to see all the diff places lights on then seeing them go off, i didn't expect countries to be half lit or nit at all? like new Zealand they cant all go to sleep lights off in unison?
-
If you want to know where a good part of man's impact to warm the earth come from just think about land use changes in the lit areas.
-
Live feed during night can reveal very confidential info. This is why its very rare to see real non touched image/videos of earth during night.
During the day, sunlight cancels most of light sources , but during the night and aside from seeing lightnings, wildfires, volcanos ,etc... you can see occasionally :
-Government/military (facilities, vehicles, aircrafts) emmiting light thus revealing their position and status.
-Explosions, (Artillery/Missile/Bomb) impacts, artillery firing, etc...
-Missiles/rockets emit bright visible light do to fuel combustion thus revealing launching location and even flight path.
==========================================================================
In this case any gathered visual data must be revised and treated before getting released to public.
The average people can't pickup anything useful from such visual data because they are not trained nor have the right equipement to do so; compared to experts who can pickup the finest details thus collecting priceless intel. -
looks animates
-
that's poor... agree that it looks like PIXAR did this. in fact, PIXAR could do better than this.
-
woooow clouds at night
-
Jeez NASA, your CGI leaves something to be desired. Looks like PIXAR did this.
-
no wonder aliens came, i'd question wtf was happening on a planet emitting a light source. imagine what it must look like
-
Simply breathtaking. When looking at thsese pictures i understand, that we - the humanity - are not the cancer of the planet, as some obnoxiously pretentious idiots like to say, but rather it's neocortex. The resemblance these intricate webs of artificial illumination bear to neural networks are mindblowing, even if only accidental. We are the mind of this big blue marble.
-
instead of a composite of data... how about a PHOTO! or FILM! I swear (sigh)
-
You can easily find much more realistic CGI than this in movies and video games... The "Suomi NPP" should do better.
-
the description claims one satellite but there are multiple different views distances and angles in this video questions arising. and turn off all the lights plants need to sleep too

BEAUTIFUL!
