My landing of space shuttle Atlantis on FSim Space Shuttle App
About | Information | History | Online | Facts | Discovery
Fsim Space Shuttle App is based on the simulator once used by real astronauts training to land the shuttle. A "full" landing in this sim includes all maneuvers once the flight computer turns over control to the pilot. Previous to this, I'd practiced the final approach -- the last 10,000 feet -- for about three weeks until I was fairly comfortable with it. On the iPad, it maps the tilt of the tablet to the steering yoke. By default the speed brake, gear, and chute are left automatic. You can turn them to manual once you master steering, but I'm not there yet. See this page for a clear explanation of what's going on during space shuttle landing from orbit to ground: http://science.howstuffworks.com/space-shuttle7.htm Once it enters the atmosphere, the shuttle is a glider -- it uses NO ENGINES, just wing and tail flaps and steep turns to slow down and steer. It flies like a brick! PS. See my photos of the REAL space shuttle Endeavor arriving at its new home in LA! http://wizzley.com/space-shuttle-endeavour-up-close-photos
