I composed this music in 1987 during my brief foray into the electronic medium. It is my depiction of four different types of astronomical objects: Jupiter and its moon, Io, a variety of star clusters, nebulae, and galaxies. It combines my profession (music) with my hobby (astronomy). I conceived of the music while looking at pictures of various objects and tried to realize my impressions in sound. I then took slides of the objects and had them put into video format, linked with the soundtrack. The technology was pretty primitive, utilizing an Atari computer along with DX7, DX100 and Akai 500 synths. The entire piece has been divided into two parts because of the space limitations of U-Tube (pt. 1 -- Transit of Io & Star Clusters; pt. 2 -- The Veil & Journey to Andromeda). The first three movements are fairly abstract, while the fourth (Journey to Andromeda) shows my affection at that time for Chick Corea's Return to Forever and Weather Report. (Wish I had lost the drum machine though!) I've since concentrated exclusively on writing for acoustic jazz ensembles, but I thought that some fanciers of astronomy and electronica might enjoy this. I no longer have the list of objects; some are well known to astronomy buffs, some are more obscure NGC objects.
