Can we see things travelling faster than light? Check out Audible: http://bit.ly/AudibleVe Music by Amarante "One Last Thing" http://bit.ly/VeAmarante Awesome animations by http://youtube.com/minutephysics Thanks to Prof. Geraint Lewis for input on earlier drafts of this video. The expanding universe is a complicated place. During inflation the universe expanded faster than light, but that's something that actually happens all the time, it's happening right now. This doesn't violate Einstein's theory of relativity since nothing is moving through space faster than light, it's just that space itself is expanding such that far away objects are receding rapidly from each other. Common sense would dictate that objects moving away from us faster than light should be invisible, but they aren't. This is because light can travel from regions of space which are superluminal relative to us into regions that are subluminal. So our observable universe is bigger than our Hubble sphere - it's limited by the particle horizon, the distance light could travel to us since the beginning of time as we know it.

Fun video, really loved it!

I think you need to explain this a bit more instead of jumping from point to point. Can you back up some of these statements with concrete explanations. You kind of whiz through your idea. You maybe understand what you are saying but I think a lot of people are missing your many points. For sensationalism and Wow factor...well your views speak volumes 3 million plus is pretty good but are you really helping people understand or just making them go Wow!

Cool. Infinitely expanding universe where everything is moving at the speed of light.

Veritasium and Vsauce, I just wish I had a teacher like them back in the school.

I need Infinite Nutella.

How can Hubble sphere grow if the speed of light is constant ?
-
uhh more big bang bullcrap
-
Then what's RED Shift
-
why just admit that universe is just illusion and we can go to sleep without even thinking about it, lol..
-
well something else that is also relative is size.... how do we know this whole thing doesn't exist in an atom....relative to the size of something else? maybe we are a tiny hair of dna in the universe which itself is part of something much larger
-
but wouldn't at some point in space we wouldn't be able to see past it because of red shift. because at some point, something could be moving so far away so fast that the light emitted by it would be so red shifted that we wouldn't be able to detect it.
-
So when I go to sleep with itchy butt hole, I wake up with smelly finger??

space is NOT expanding faster than speed of light. YOU ARE CONFUSING INFLATION THEORY, which suggests that at the moment after the big bang, the universe expanded at many times the speed of light. AND THEN IT STOPPED (well slowed to near a crawl.) The universe is expanding, but its MUCH MUCH slower than the speed of light.
-
If two objects are moving away from a central point in opposite directions you don't get to add their speeds together. It's irrelevant.
-
Exactly how do Adam and Eve fit into this?
-
It would seem more plausible that the way we look at blue-shifted light is flawed (the reason anyone even thinks we are expanding, because of the lack of it), rather than we are infinitely expanding into ourselves at every point in the universe. For instance: perhaps pilot waves exist and the compression of light waves from an object moving towards us cause interference in those waves and remove the ability for light to travel indefinitely in a vacuum.

How many marbles can you fit in the observable universe to completely fill it?

So, eventually would our Hubble Sphere surpass the observable universe eventually?
