Thinking about how we get Calories from the land limits human population densities. Created by Sal Khan. But the Sun is tiny compared to the solar system which is tiny compared to the distance to the next star. Oh, did we mention that there are over 100 billion stars in our galaxy (which is about 100,000 light years in diameter) which is one of hundreds of billions of galaxies in just the observable universe (which might be infinite for all we know). Don't feel small. We find it liberating. Your everyday human stresses are nothing compared to this enormity that we are a part of. Enjoy the fact that we get to be part of this vastness! About Khan Academy: Khan Academy offers practice exercises, instructional videos, and a personalized learning dashboard that empower learners to study at their own pace in and outside of the classroom. We tackle math, science, computer programming, history, art history, economics, and more. Our math missions guide learners from kindergarten to calculus using state-of-the-art, adaptive technology that identifies strengths and learning gaps. We've also partnered with institutions like NASA, The Museum of Modern Art, The California Academy of Sciences, and MIT to offer specialized content. For free. For everyone. Forever. #YouCanLearnAnything Subscribe to Khan Academy’s Cosmology & Astronomy channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UChNPnEkW8LYZ5Rwi8_A2-DA?sub_confirmation=1 Subscribe to Khan Academy: https://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=khanacademy

Lol.where I come from,population density is around 6000 people/square kilometer.
-
this guys a genius. sal, what should i invest my money in?!
-
A few talks with Bill Gates and now you preach Population Control? Wow, real eye opener!
-
That's true at least until we have matter-antimatter powered replicators.
-
@idiotrun1997 Some people in third world countries have many children to help with labor on farms and other physical labor needs for the family.
-
900 Khans per square kilometer. Think about it.
-
Ah - Malthus' theory? One of the only things I can remember from my Geography lessons :) Love your vids ! x
-
@jjpp1993 I think not, he is a genius I wish I could 1/10 of his knowledge.
-
Humans need to learn to stop mass reproducing, especially third world countries. Why have more kids when you can't support them all, not enough resources? Either zip up for wear a condom
-
@jjpp1993 He does only need to know one single thing: How to think properly and apply it. :-)
-
I'm sorry this video was far too long for what you were trying to say. The subject is very interesting though. It is weird that you don't mention kcal(kilo calories) but instead call it calories and Calories...

-
u need to look up the word gentlemen Sal.
-
I think a few people got confused about the square kilometer. I think he means only the land used for producing/gathering the food, not all the land in a country. Also population growth today is - luckily - limited by education in many countries and the third world will hopefully follow too.
-
Over-population is a self-correctable problem. Many third world nations will figure this out.
-
Now, this would have been be a good place to introduce our good old friend Malthus and the Malthusian trap. And how he was defeated by industrialization.
-
Khan, can you site sources if somebody wants to read more?
-
@f0revern0ty0urs2 babies come from people, not the land... there are some really fertile people.
-
