Space industry, asteroid (and related) mining, fuel and water production, etc., will make the case for rotating wheel stations. Those industries, probably for many decades, will be done robotically. But in the very long term, when those industry activities expand to great distances away from Earth, it will become extremely beneficial to have a staffed presence much closer to the mining/manufacturing activity. By that time, space industry will have sufficient funds for placing these big rotating wheel stations in those regions. This scenario is, in my opinion, how it should play-out. Thus, private sector industry (capitalism/free-market) will be the driving force. Another huge side benefit of space industry, is the large incoming rocks that would do damage to Earth, would be snatched for industry use and profit.

This movie was way ahead of its time

delicious, like the most decadent chocolate
-
a great audition for NASA, other than that, boring as shit

This is not Star Wars here, this is some one in 1969 envisioning what 2001 would be like with classical music. He forgot one factor and that is were not going any bigger then the international space station in size in the real 2001 reality. were going to have to wait another 20 years or so for something fantastic like this to happen. 2040s or 2060s.

Spaceflight done right!

This is probably one of the greatest movie sequences of all time. 'The Blue Danube' is absolutely perfect, and the visual effects hold up as better than some of today's effects. Everything's just so graceful

Fuck you Stanley Kubrick

so we are in 2016 already, how come we still don't have stuff like this

Back when movies did not SUCK.

1968. No computers. No digital efects. Justo work.
Uma das cenas mais fantásticas do cinema. -
Still one of the greatest sci-fi epics and the special effects still hold up even today. But what I love about this scene is the inclusion of Strauss and "The Blue Danube". It's a waltz and the spaceship and station are the dancers. Spinning around in space as they twirl around the Earth and all done without CGI.

I have to play this music when I'm playing Elite Dangerous

The man is a fucking genius. Better than Jesus.

And to think this happened 15 years ago!! Are we in a alternate reality?? What happened to us where we are living in this dire reality..

stanley kubrick GENIUS!!!!!!!!!!!!

This scene shows two of the elements of human potential - science and art - taken to the highest level and combined wonderfully. Kubrick captures Clarke's intention of demonstrating that mankind is worthy of moving into the next realm of evolution. Keir Dullea is the equivalent of a sperm seeking the egg (obelisk) to spawn something new. HA! The Essence of it all!!.........
