Kepler's Third Law of Motion (Astronomy)
About | Information | History | Online | Facts | Discovery
Kepler’s 3rd Law is sometimes called The Law of Periods: The square of the period of any planet is proportional to the cube of the semimajor axis of its orbit. In this video, we derive Kepler’s Third Law from Newton’s Law of Gravitation. We also show you how to use this law to determine the orbit of Mars around the Sun. Finally, we apply Kepler’s Third law to the Moon’s orbit around the Earth, using it to calculate the mass of the Earth. gud explanation
-
the mass of the orbiting body around the sun has no effect on the proportionality constant
-
Kepler's period law says: (r1/r2)^3=(P1/P2)^2. replacing P=2*pi*r/Vp, we have r*Vp^2=Variable. Not constant, because Vp=Ct and (r=variable). And ,due to Vp=Ct,the celestial motion is [r=-4*t^2+4*t*T-4*T^2/6].This is not an ellipse, but a parabolic vortex spiral. Also discovered by Newton, but preferred to say that the orbits are elliptical.See PRINCIPIA page 290,translation of Andre Motte.

The explanation is lovely but i doubt that why do we use the semi major axis of the mars' orbit around the sun for all the calculation stuff when sun is always at one of the focii of the eliptical system ?
PLS HELP -
Weighing planets! I feel like such a caveman! Really polished video guys!
-
Great work with your content and the visual presentation!
-
This all went over my head which made me kick myself in the butt for not taking algebra.
-
very good.
-
Fantastic explanation.
-
I know it's inappropriate, but I gotta say, the presenter is hot
-
I'm a first year astronomy student and this helped a ton! Thank you!
-
I'm in year 10 (Aus) and didn' have a clue what the law meant before this. Thankyou!!!
-
You guys do a great job i love learning things from Socratica
-
can you do geosynchronous and geostationary orbits. Your channel has some of the best explanations ( better than even khan academy in some ways) and satellite orbits are very poorly explained almost everywhere on the internet.

enlightenment of human brain absolutely amazing!

Hi um I am 7th grader(I am learning this) and I enjoy your explanation of Kepler's law but I don't understand the math portion of it. I would like help please lol.
-
Hello, :)) I really appreciate how these channel is very educative + subscribed and also what's the intro's music?
-
She's hot.

You're great. Thank you for the great knowledge your very inspired way of relating the information.
