Is School Broken? (Also...ANNOUNCEMENTS OF IMPORT)

Wait how did you get K-12 for free? I assume your parents paid taxes which paid for your education, making it of course not free.

I realize it is about a year too late to add a comment to this video, but I want to anyway. So here we go.

I had two very distinct high school experiences. For the first two years, I went to a normal public high school, located about 10 minutes from my house. This school was filled with uninterested kids, disconnected teachers, and was all around a horrible place to be forced to spend a majority of your time. I hated it there. I felt like I was learning nothing, and was just parroting back enough information to get by, and as I am lucky enough to test well, this did not take much effort. It was easy, and it was boring.

My last two years of high school was entirely different. I had the amazing opportunity to attend a performing arts charter school. A charter school, for those unfamiliar with the term, is essentially a more specialized public school. This school became my everything. My classes challenged me, the people around me were excited to be there and learn things, and I was able to spend time doing what I loved without fear of the arts program being cut.

But, in a way, I still had that fear. People don't seem to understand charter schools. The moment I say "performing arts charter school," people think all I did was sing and dance all day, and that I couldn't have possibly learned anything "useful." A lot of politicians want to shut charter schools down entirely, because they don't see the value in keeping them open. I learned so much more at my charter school, both artistically and traditionally academically, than I did at my old public high school. I was given the opportunity to take college classes, my writing and math skills improved dramatically, and I was in an environment that was positive and encouraging and amazing. And why is studying the arts seen as lesser, anyway? It takes every bit as much skill to be a good actor or painter or photographer as it does to be a good mathematician or engineer, it just takes different skills. Not everyone is smart in the same way. Not everyone can get an amazing SAT score, but they might be the best sculptor the word has ever seen.

What I'm saying, I guess, is that I want this attitude against charter schools, particularly arts-oriented ones, to change. People need an education that is going to nurture the skills that they have in whatever way is best for them. Being in such a creative environment allowed for much more personalized education, and I think every student that attended the school was better because of it. When I say I attended public school, people get it, but when I say I went to a performing arts charter school, they write me off. I couldn't possibly be smart if I studied dance instead of going to gym class, or took acting classes on top of my math, science and english classes. And if what you want to do is become an artist, or an actor, or a musician, you should be able to study that just as much as someone who wants to be a software engineer should be able to study programing. There isn't only one kind of smart, and there isn't only one way to make kids smarter. People need to understand that the traditional format doesn't work best for everyone, and for some, transferring to non-traditional schools will be the best decision they ever make.

What could possibly be gained by gender studies being required in a public school? I've never taken gender studies, but looking at people who have taken it, it seems like a useless subject at best, and a harmful subject at worst. I don't doubt that there is some gender studies curriculum that could prove useful. I just think that the way gender studies presently exists, it is a waste of time. What could I possibly need to learn about gender that I am not already taught in biology (which is already a required class)?

That's why I love crash course, it is how learning should be. Knowledge is more important than a test, your life is the real test.

School does not represent critical and creative thinking in the rest of your life 100% of the time.

we don't need a religious course on gender studies in public high schools. keep your church and our state seperate, ty.

up democrats, or not even, all I care about is about love embodying this world :).and yeah, almost all my high school (3yrs) has been bullshit. I call it like that. It is just a nonsensical curriculum, and even if you were in good clases, still, besides the skills they don't teach anything that really matters and makes the diff.

I hope, as a sophomore is high school, that my children will attend a school that focuses more on life lessons than freaking test scores. I find it extremely difficult to see a future for public education that is any better.

I'd like it if you talked about the federal government's funding of science, mostly NASA and medical research

nice point Hank,I know its too late but there is this problem about introvert and extrovert, in school they always make the extrovert as the good and introvert as the bad,the teacher always give a group assignments and everyone have to actively take part in it,and kid who are shy or quite usually get lower grade,kid who are loud and active get a high grade,and when lunch /break when some kid is alone by him/herself the teacher would then tell other kid to ask the kid to join their circle and tell the parents that their kid is too quite and can't get along with other kid bla bla bla

I want to read/watch crash course and have lunch in peace ,I'm tired of interacting with human thanks to group assignment,and its not like I dont have any friends or never interact with other,I just want to be alone more than other people, I love reading a book or listening to music,and I want to be alone because I want to ,stop pestering me,your pity is misplaced

I just feel like school only offers one type of education, my school just kept shoving university, being a vet and living in the same community all my life.
They didn't teach me to be my authentic self, they didn't teach me how to unlock my own potential and they didn't help me with finding out who I was in the world. For young people this stuff is far more important than just learning for exams and being told learning is just for an 'A'. How do we even know everyone is academic? Many people are very clever and capable but just don't have the skills for homework and an industrial learning setting.

You know it's not free right? Like in no way is it free. Your parents paid, and if they are still alive and still pay taxes, they still pay for it, and you now, and for the rest of your tax paying life, do and shall pay for it.

Why would we need a gender studies course?
