Installing Solar Panels on my Home by Astrum Solar/Direct Energy Solar
About | Information | History | Online | Facts | Discovery
Whole house video installation and demonstration with an explanation regarding rebates and SREC value in the State of Pennsylvania. This video is not in any way connected with Astrum Solar, we are simply customers and this video shares our experience with them. Astrum had a top rating with the PA Better Business Bureau and offered the BEST system we could find. Originally we were going to simply have small solar panels on each of our out buildings for goats, chickens and so on and then it just made sense to do the entire house and be done with it. New technology in solar photovolatics was introduced to the marked on July 11th of 2011 which vastly improved low light capabilities... this technology was made available to us via Astrum Solar and we found their warranty and service to be our BEST choice... here you have it. Learn how YOU can afford to help reduce your green house gas contribution and safe money doing it http://www.astrumsolar.com/features/flexible_financing you can lease or buy the system...

Frederick, your video is inspiring. We're interested in (1) following your example and (2) reducing our carbon footprint.
We want to implement this in our home and our business:

I wonder how well solar would work with AC to cool down a building? -
Frederick, Thanks for your feedback. I'm considering 6000 watt grid tied system. That should cover 80-90% of my electrical usage. I'm still investigating the project with plans of visiting local installations to see what I can learn from current owner's experiences. Right now my biggest concerns is the local winter. Thanks again. Dan

What part of PA are you from. I live in North-West PA and have a lot of cloud cover due to lake effect from Lake Erie.

What's with the roosters
-
what happens with a new roof replacement? omg
-
What brand of panels did you use?
Thanks! -
Big upfront cost, however I see where it does pay off, And I do love to watch the electric meter spin backwards. Excellect video and congrats

Thanks for commenting... we've determined that after adding electric stove/oven, electric water heater and everything else annd powering three poultry buildings that the system is oversized. We still have One Million 700 Thousand Watt Hours in surplus energy credits just from June and July. We could have gone smaller... but I'm not complaining :)

That's a lot of solar! Although I guess you have a farm and leaving Pennsylvania which probably means you get less sun than where I live. System looks great I have the end phase converters myself very good stuff

We use it up rather than sell it back to the utility... selling back to the utility, they pay only 7 cents per kwh, while they charge 11 cents per kwh. This year we used up the surplus with electric heat. You can go to Astrum Solar website and see the current cost of a similar system with no obligation... posting our cost doesn't help others determine their own. There are changes in inverter and panel costs... so it's best to check in with the site.

Are you willing to share the amount paid of your system? And why don't you sell your power back to the power company?
-
UPDATE: During the Month of March, our system generated 400kw more than we used. Even though the electrical power consumption was less that zero. The Electrical Utility Bills us $9.00 simply for being a customer. Result, you will never have a bill of $ 0.00 it is best to size your system to your consumption levels. The utility here, holds the meter reading at "zero" "N"= no usage, until your consumption catches up with your generation levels... you are not selling back energy.

@cac9633 My incubators do have their own battery backup system. The whole house system does not have a battery bank. A whole house battery system wasn't cost effective considering that we have never had an outage beyond a couple of hours. Our electric bill is zero.

I'm I understanding that during a power outage the system shuts down, there is no battery backup? And you don't have power ? I thought one of the reasons you went solar is so you would not loose power while incubating eggs?

UPDATE! This system was installed and connected on November 17th. Received my November electric bill the first week of December 2011. Even with the shorter winter days and some rainy days... the bill was cut by 2/3. Considering the system was only generating electricity for roughly half the month, that's EXCELLENT! Watch for my article on solar at GardenGirlTV in January...
