IBM Model M vs Unicomp Spacesaver M keyboard
About | Information | History | Online | Facts | Discovery
WARNING: I am not a proper touch typist! Typing on an IBM Model M 1391401 (1987) vs Unicomp Spacesaver M keyboard. The Model M is definitely built to a higher standard. The build quality is noticeably superior, as the Unicomp has imperfect plastic moulding and some keys are crooked. The Unicomp also creaks when you push down on the shell. In terms of typing feel, I would say the Model M also feels slightly better. The actuation seems to be more substantial. The keys also have a more noticeable "twang" compared to the Unicomp. Nevertheless, the difference is minimal and you would be happy typing on the Unicomp if you're already used to the old Model M series.

IBM/Unicomp Model M all the way for serious typing duties! (and night gaming if you happen to have hearing-impaired neighbors)
For late night usage and spouse's sanity, I highly recommend a Cooler Master QuickFire in super-light Brown or Red Cherry MX switches. Some models come with backlightning.
P.S. Don't mind the noise levels at the office with the lazy colleagues, since the boss is the one that should be positively impressed that he has a fast typist. -
For typing/working it's Model M all the way. I wouldn't think abotu using anything less. OTOH I find them slightly annoying for WASD FPS games. For those I have an $8 squishy keyboard leaning against my PC on the floor, I just lift it onto the table when I want to play something.

I own a Model M as my "daily driver" but also have a wireless membrane keyboard for when i'm hooked up to my TV. Buckling Springs are just fine for games. I've put over 100 hours each on Warframe, Mass Effect, and Quake Live and had zero problems and haven't noticed any stat differences between membrane or buckling springs. But everyone is different I suppose.

you don't really want to 'game' on a buckling spring keyboard, for FPS at least...
