Nice technique. Works well but I am loosing some detail in the astro features. Is there a way to select a portion of the despeckled image and apply it to the whole image?

I am using a D3100 also but won't load into GIMP I tend to use Nikon RAW which is called NEF do I have to convert NEF to a different format to show up in GIMP?

It can be annoying. Usually on a Mac it doesn't load them up. You can display them with cmd+L for the layer box and cmd+B for the toolbox. Double click the brush to bring up the options. Or you can find them under Window / Dockable dialogs
