2:30 The USSR never caught up because they never tried to once the US got there. It's like how the US skipped literally doing everything else the USSR did because it had already been done. The USSR had no reason to unnecessarily waste resources one the US got there.
Anyway, the US still hasn't caught up with itself because much of the technology was lost in being first to the moon. The US in the end, accomplished jackshit other than wasting tons of resourced to put a flag on the moon and not being able to do it again without wasting the resources to replicated the mission. All because they were trying to get there first and never thought to think to save this data and not rush it so it could be used for the future. -
