Hakeem M. Oluseyi - TEDxOrlando - How We Know: The Big Bang
About | Information | History | Online | Facts | Discovery
Hakeem M. Oluseyi is an internationally recognized astrophysicist, inventor, science communicator, and humanitarian. He has addressed diverse problems in astrophysics including understanding the nature of the dark energy that accelerates our universe, the origin and evolution of the Milky Way galaxy, and the mechanisms by which magnetic fields heat and accelerate astrophysical plasmas. His work in technology development has included developing instruments for space-based astrophysical research and new techniques for manufacturing computer chips. Originating from one of New Orleans' poorest neighborhoods, Hakeem has made it his life's work to educate the poor in America and in the 3rd World. Some of his current science and education projects include being a member of the development team for the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope, which is the highest priority observatory for the U.S.; the UNESCO Earth-Observing Satellite, which is a project between the U.S., Russia, and African nations; and Hands-On Universe Africa, a project to bring real scientific data to science classrooms in underdeveloped nations. About TEDx, x= independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x=independently organized TED event.

Still not convinced. I prefer the lazy and ignorant explanation that my religion offer.

Brilliant! I absolutely enjoyed the subject matter and delivery, it is obvious that the speaker not only knows and is one with the subject matter but enjoys what he does.
Physics was not my favorite subject in college although I took some physics courses. But between Neil deGrasse Tyson and Hakeem Oluseyi I have a new interest for physics...well Astrophysics -
There's something about his delivery that I dislike. His knowledge is extensive and he obviously loves his subject, I just can't like his talks, even if I try, and I have tried.
-
You can tell he's intimately acquainted with his subjects , a real pleasure to listen to
-
This guy is very intelligent and very interesting to listen to. I would love to attend one of his seminars. #Mancrush
-
This guy is just amazing what an intelligent well spoken man! I love listening to him
-
Would love to hear him more

I would still consider Tyson to be a scientist. I don't know if he currently does research but he plays a more critical role in the public face of science, public relations. Lets face it, the vast masses are clueless about science. Some don't understand how basic research can lead to in the field applications, i.e. technology. On the other hand, Tyson understands scientific method, has the training and background to be considered one.

I'd say you're half right, Xenthoid. If you define "scientist" as someone who actually does science, only Gates qualifies; Neil Tyson does not do science. Gates and Oluseyi do real science and have real discoveries. Gates is a giant. Oluseyi is newer but has many scientific accomplishments already; search on "oluseyi nsbp ted" to see a summary of his work.
-
You must don't get out very much. I guess you never heard of Neil degrasse Tyson astrophysicist...or for that matter, Sylvester James gates a string theorist.

Excellent lecture!
-
Congratulations to Mister Oluseyi, I am a white man sorry but I have to say: I've never seen a black scientist, I hope this will inspire many other people of the same race, I really liked the explanation. I wanted to be honest because internet can expose the truth (good or bad) of all human beings.
-
Couldn't have said it better. NICE!!!
-
ok, but whose to say that this "grater(sic) power" is intelligent, or personal? Okay , let's say it is intelligent, why does the universe necessitate a "creator", but this alleged creator (who would be infinitely more complex than the universe) doesn't require a creator? some logic u have there
-
rolmfao ppl really think there is no god..... all of this was created by a power much grater than us......its logic...
-
Brilliant lecture. Oluseyi is quite a lecturer.
-
Suddenly I feel like I was way too informal with him when he was my teacher.
-
One of the best lectures I've seen.
-
this guy is from the ghetto (or so i've read). he carried a gun, probably did some stupid shit.. the environment encouraged him to be a "bad ass"... but he overcame ALL that and became a brilliant scientist who does important work around the world (trying to get telescopes to poor areas of the world etc). imagine how many more brilliant minds like his are wasted in poor neighborhoods in America... he got out because he was lucky and discovered a passion, but most don't.

Neil Tyson's got some friendly competition ...
