Grid-Interactive Power System with Solar, Inverter, Batteries, and Generator
About | Information | History | Online | Facts | Discovery
I discuss the layout and interconnection of our 7.65kw Astroenergy solar panel array, Rolls Surrette 19.2kwh battery bank, Outback Radian GS8048 Inverter, GSLC, Generac 11kw Generator, as well as various methods to reduce your electric consumption including heat pumps, etc. I also discuss my reasoning for two critical load panels plus the main panel. Our system has been ordered, and a future video will show it installed and functioning. If you are considering putting together a grid-tie, grid-interactive, or off-grid system, this video might be helpful for you. Notes: Obviously before any of this, you want to make sure you're house is operating as efficiently as it can- this includes replacing incandescent lighting and inefficient appliances with compact fluorescent or LED lights and upgrading to more energy efficient appliances- we have already done that. You also want to make sure that you have a well-insulated home with good double or triple pane windows- ours are argon filled. Our home was built in 2012 and is very tight and well insulated. So after all of that, the steps in this video come into play. Also, please forgive my two year old in the background who didn't want to go to bed. :-) Corrections: Midnight Solar (not Power) is the maker of the surge protectors. http://www.midnitesolar.com/productPhoto.php?product_ID=284&productCatName=Surge%20Protection%20Devices&productCat_ID=23&sortOrder=2&act=p Other Links: Belkin Conserve Power Strip http://www.belkin.com/email/conserve-emailBlast/ Outback Radian GS8048 http://www.outbackpower.com/outback-products/inverters-chargers/item/radian-series-gs8048

Hi. I am kind of a newbie to Solar..... ironically have joined a Solar Company here in India! Lol. Your video was a great tutorial. Informative and Enjoyable. Just one point, in successive videos (if you make them), kindly zoom in on the Board and writings. Overall great presentation! Hope your system is working well, now in 2016.
Best Wishes,

Great explanation of your system. Someday (not here in Oklahoma) I will have a system similar to yours. Right now, mine turns off grid power (120v side, for six circuits) when I am making power...thus reducing on-grid time and electric bill costs. It is a capable of off-grid 24/7 instead of just 7-8 hours a day if SHTF or power goes out (emergencies). Right now I am offsetting about 30-40% a month...which adds up! Anyway, two things I like about your system. 1) Batteries. So many say no way on batteries...however, if you get a big enough solar array, you can run the house and charge batteries. 2) LP generator. Even smarter IMO...in an area that only has 4.5 hours of solar (avg) and being in Indiana, best investment for living comfortably. 3) Grid-interactive. Indiana is much better than Oklahoma. As long as utility taxes are low and they buy back a lot of power...you should be good to go. Anyway, smart/intelligent presentation...great job. I spent a lot of time in Indiana growing up (grew up in southern MI).

I really enjoy watching this. You did a spectacular job of explaining everything. I'm curious about 2 things. First, why batteries at all ? If you are grid tied, the batteries do you no good as far as storage. And your back up generator will handle your needs should the grid go down. Or are you worried the grid may go down for more than say a week at a time ? If that's the case, I can understand batteries. Secondly, your solar tax credit only applies toward federal income tax you may pay, so I'm assuming you are in an income bracket that gets you into even the lowest (10%) tax bracket ? Your standard deduction and exemptions stack up to quite a bit for a family of 3 or 4, plus if you donate to an IRA all that comes off before federal income tax gets applied, or, if you are self employed like in my case, we can plow away a ton of money into tax deferred retirement and write off our health care costs -once again before we even start to pay any federal tax. Just curious if you took that into account before going down this road. You probably did are you seem well on top of things.

That sounds like a very nice system. I like the logic in the design.
I didn't think you did desulfating on AGM. But I'm probably thinking of equalization... -
Did you build this system yet? Great explanation! Did you consider the XW6048 also? If so what decision points did you make to go with the Radian?
