GFS Vintage '59 (F-spaced) vs. SEYMOUR DUNCAN JB trembucker
About | Information | History | Online | Facts | Discovery
I made a short clip using the GFS and then plugged into the exact same setup with the same strings when I swapped it with the JB... quite a difference. The pickups were not connected to a tone pot. I used a Roland Microcube (rec out) on the "clasic stack" setting into a Macbook pro laptop.

Thanks for that test! That GFS aren't bad.

Man, it is incredible how many pick-ups are produced by the same companies and they sound almost the same... especially when distorted. The only effective way to hear the difference in tones is when you test them on clean sounds.

The Duncan SH-1 '59 would've been a better comparison with the GFS. They're both based on the same idea with 42 gauge wire around the 8Kohm mark. The JB is wound with 44 gauge wire over 16Kohm and is significantly hotter with less treble and gobs more midrange.

Actually most modern trem bridges have the wider 2" spacing and need the trembucker or f-spaced (depending on manufacturer) in the bridge for proper string/pole piece alignment
-
Is the JB a paf clone? Maybe a comparison with a sd 59 or pearly gates would be better. But I actually prefer the GFS. I like the more clarity. You can always tweak that away with the tone knob. Thanks for the review.

Is it possible that the GFS would sound even better if a non f-spaced was installed? F-space is for wider necks
-
In this case Suhr V60LP's... but in any case you can match output by adjusting pickup height.
-
both great pickups, but i think the gfs comes closer to what i like. is that also a minihum?
-
I like both, I reckon they would be perfect together in a band :D But a stupid part of me will always prefer the Seymour Duncans because of the label :L
-
The GFS hands down. The JB is too dark.
-
Would you say this is a pretty good PAF? Meaning does it have the correct characteristics.
-
how did you get fender spaced? it doesn't say on the website
-
@fanofthemusic1090 A Seymour Duncan design that spaces the poles of the pickup exactly right for tremolo-spaced guitars. Fender and Floyd Rose systems have a wider spacing than normal hard-tail guitars.
-
the JB sounds like the GFS with the tone rolled off a little
-
Oke the seymour duncan has a better sound but I think that GFS are quality pickups.
-
So Mama, whats your veredict, I sort of like the seamour better.
-
is jb good for van halen playing ?
-
@cast390 well it's a matter of taste, For me I prefer the sound of GFS
-
The GFS sounds to twangy not fullbodied like the JB,JB is the clear winner here
