I don't think they needed space aliens or some other third party to tell them this. I also think it's wrong to say that they had an understanding of science in any way. Science is a method that did not exist back then. Understanding how the world works is not automatically science at all.
I think deep down we all know what we are and by extension, what everything is and how it works. We don't need science to show us that, we just have to look within us. I think these ancient cultures are proof of that.
I know there are still people with the same deep understanding gained by spiritual practice, but the sad thing is that today in modern society we do not listen to them. -
