First Space Shuttle Launch - STS-1 (1981)
About | Information | History | Online | Facts | Discovery
STS-1 was the first orbital flight of NASA's Space Shuttle, launched on 12 April 1981, and returning to Earth 14 April. Space Shuttle Columbia orbited the Earth 37 times in this 54.5-hour mission. It was the first American manned space flight since the Apollo-Soyuz Test Project on 15 July 1975. STS-1 was the only US manned maiden test flight of a new spacecraft system, although it was the culmination of atmospheric testing of the Space Shuttle orbiter. Footage from "Hail Columbia!"

Ladies and Gentlemen, this is the moment when the STS program sucked up nearly all of their funding for the next 30 years.
-
wow.
-
...and that folks is what a white elephant with a rocket up it's ass looks like.
-
The distinctive orange look the large external tank has is an insulating foam that was only painted white for the first two STS launches. It wasn't painted after the first two missions because the paint alone saved 600lbs (272kg) in weight alone.

fuck you bitches it was an badass ride, even the disasters were badass. forget all those fucking negative things and respect the fucking space shuttle fleet for what they fucking are, guys. bush did what he did was neccissary for a new beginning. and that beginning over THERE(looks at and points towards dragon 2, waiting atop of falcon 9 rocket peacefully for its maiden flight) is the first american space capsule since apollo 17!

"A thunderous roar shakes the earth like the whole world exploding!" It's moments like this that make me really proud to be an American.....then you have this years Presidential candidates.........
-
Remember when we used to accomplish stuff like this... back before liberals slew the spirit of the nation?

that looks very skary

It was President Bush that phased out the shuttle program. He wanted NASA to take the space program to the next level and make the USA proud again like it did when we sent astronauts to the moon. President Obama, couldn't find his ass with both hands and he couldn't find the Moon on a full moon night! He thinks HIGH means blazing up with some cool Kona Gold.

Its 200 feet long and weights 2000 tons, it blows my mind that it gets off the ground. Pure genius.
-
always loved the shuttle and it achieved amazing things but it's time to get out of earth orbit and SLS will allow deep space exploration. EM1 should be a manned mission sling shot around the moon and back in 2018 rather than waiting 4 to 5 more years......need to think bold and big and get some of that Apollo swagger back
-
wow the shuttle test program, what there was of it, was completely different than apollo.
-
Crazy to watch the whole rocket sway back and forth as they test fire the shuttles engines
-
Hail Columbia.... tears for the loss in Feb 2003...

We're something else.
From fumbling around with rocks
to what we see in this film...
There's nothing we can't do if
we all pull-together, and
support each other.
Man, if we could all stop being
selfish for just one year; we
would leap ahead so fast, it
may even blow the sawdust out of
our heads...Making everything
possible. Even freedom for all!
This is our time...Make it great.
