But the Sun is tiny compared to the solar system which is tiny compared to the distance to the next star. Oh, did we mention that there are over 100 billion stars in our galaxy (which is about 100,000 light years in diameter) which is one of hundreds of billions of galaxies in just the observable universe (which might be infinite for all we know). Don't feel small. We find it liberating. Your everyday human stresses are nothing compared to this enormity that we are a part of. Enjoy the fact that we get to be part of this vastness! About Khan Academy: Khan Academy offers practice exercises, instructional videos, and a personalized learning dashboard that empower learners to study at their own pace in and outside of the classroom. We tackle math, science, computer programming, history, art history, economics, and more. Our math missions guide learners from kindergarten to calculus using state-of-the-art, adaptive technology that identifies strengths and learning gaps. We've also partnered with institutions like NASA, The Museum of Modern Art, The California Academy of Sciences, and MIT to offer specialized content. For free. For everyone. Forever. #YouCanLearnAnything Subscribe to Khan Academy’s Cosmology & Astronomy channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UChNPnEkW8LYZ5Rwi8_A2-DA?sub_confirmation=1 Subscribe to Khan Academy: https://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=khanacademy

There is a real resistance to giving the aboriginal people credit for anything here in in Australia... Check out comments from "BrickInTheWall1" below. He is actively combating any suggestion that the aboriginal people were capable of engaging in an action with a mind to affect the future. It is only recently with the emphasis on sustainable food production that we are taking notice of how the Aboriginal people used the land. The aboriginal people would not actively trap and keep livestock, as the unforgiving landscape does not lend itself to doing so without significant infrastructure. As a way of ensuring food was accessible, the aboriginal people would chose sites near shelter and water... They would then observe what the animals they wanted to eat ate themselves and the environment they thrived in, and set out to replicate this in the vicinity of shelter and (and using) water. Fire and seed collection played a significant role in this. Even today we can find evidence of ancient community's through rock art, where plants that have no business being there (the seeds cannot travel by natural means) are present, and as an extension so are animals that feed off of them. The only possible explanation is that the aboriginal people had a sustainable system for ensuring plants and animals were available to them by manipulating the land... Its a shame we are still taught in school that Aboriginal people lived off of grubs and yams alone... It is as if our ignorance is so entrenched that we refuse to give them credit for even their own survival.

Ummm, could only find info on a diprotodon optatum, not a "driptodon" optatum. Am I blind, or are you dyslexic? ;)

...technique. The secondary consequences are that it alters the environment directly afterwards and prevents wholesale destruction of food sources from larger bush fires. There is no mention, other than in the theoretical work, of any primary intention to alter the landscape and turn it into grasslands or if there is, I can't find it. There is no doubt that to live in that way for thousands of years is a sophisticated way of life, but there are limits to the claims i.e. There is no calculus.

@TheNarcMan Yes, land management wasn't approached systematically with an end goal in sight beyond subsistence. As is the case for the vast majority of human enterprise. I'd like to point to "The "Fire Stick Farming" Hypothesis: Australian Aboriginal Foraging Strategies, Biodiversity, and Anthropogenic Fire Mosaics" Where the purpose and technique are outlined. Sal has given a false impression that the primary purpose is to alter the landscape. The primary purpose is to gather food as a hunting
-
@TheNarcMan The primary reason to do it is food. That's where it starts and ends. Just because something has a long term consequence doesn't mean the practitioners understood or intended it. Show me evidence that they did and I'll believe it. No one gives credit to the pioneers of the industrial revolution for engineering climate change, you know why? Because they didn't have the slightest clue what would happen, they were just making money the best way they knew how.

I TOTALLY get why this is in the Astronomy and Cosmology playlist and not the history playlist... -.-

@randomwindowsstuffz Pride goes before destruction, and haughtiness before a fall
-
@Zorn101 My thinking is abstract! The highest level of thinking in the blooms taxonomy! That's a good thing!!! Abnormal thinking? That means I stand out of the crowd! Just like Einstein! I'm so proud of myself...
-
@randomwindowsstuffz Aboriginal or away from original. Is an offensive name given by Caucasian races to people who have been subjugated and marginalised. The reason Aboriginal is offensive. Is because if I told you your thinking is abstract and abnormal. it is a negitive connotation. or away from the norm. If you where the original owner of some thing and some one comes over and claims other wise they would call you Aboriginal and take your stuff. This tactics has been used by many peoples.

@Zorn101 Well next time try using more sources! Wikitionary . com: In latin, ab means of, from, by, since. Vocabulary-lesson-plans . com: The prefix in latin means from or away from. (abdicate, abduction, aberration, abhorrence, abject). Wordinfo . info: a-, ab-, and abs- means from or away from. Virtualsalt . com: away, down, from, off Medterms . com: from, away from, off I had to post this again.

So "Try an etymology dictionary" to yourself! My teacher says that a fact is reliable when there are 3 sources. And I have 5!
-
@Zorn101 : makes sense indeed, thanks for the extra effort to explain it to me ( and others too :p )
-
Try an etymology dictionary. Look up Ab in Latin they all say the same thing. Ab when used as a prefix denotes a negative. Do you think the racist people who landed on North America and Australia Intended it to be a term of endearment? Sail to the new land, Take the new land, Kill the inhabitants Give the survivors new title to pose them as different. Any self respecting Indigenous peoples would never have used this term to describe them selfs. and it is disrespectful to do so.
-
@Zorn101 whatever pleases you mate, you seems to find nuance i cannot see, wish i could talk to you face to face, we could reach some agreement, whatever, i'll stay with my "mistake", cannot approve the "derogatory" value of "ab" in the word aboriginal, based on the fact that the word aborigene ( latin ) means litteraly original people of the country they live in. Trying to look for the facts, try not to blame me for the mistakes i could do mate :) ( errare humanum est , isn't it ? ;) )
-
@drummaboy2346 it's not a mistake that for 100's of years Aboriginal ( away from original ) has been used to define a group of people who are not caucasian..
-
@kryptonaute a-, ab-, abs- (Latin: from, away, away from; used as a prefix). * 1. a-, ab-, abs- away from, off, badly [The usual form is ab; ab-, a-, abs- Meaning in English away , Etymology (root origin) Latin ab "away" English examples : abnormal, abrasion, absent, abstract, Next time try opening more than one book before you respond. Maybe then you will show more than biased.
-
@Zorn101 "ab" suffix marks either the point of origin ( from ), or the remoteness, ( cf wiktionnary, the french version which is more detailed than the english one ). Aborigene is a term which has named the first inhabitants of different countries not only australia ( cf cnrtl.fr/etymologie/aborig%C3%A8ne try a google translate french -> english ) That's it !
