Sadly, throughout the years there have been numerous absolutely haunting disasters in pursuit of going to and exploring space. These events forever changed the future of how organizations like NASA, go about space explorations. Today SUPERLATIVES takes a look at Eerie & Terrifying Space Disasters. Thank you for watching! SHORTENED SCRIPT TO FOLLOW ALONG: 1) Columbia NASA 82 seconds into the launch of Columbia on January 16 of 2003, a large chuck of thermal insulation foam fell from a bipod ramp part of the structure that attached the external tank to the shuttle. Video of the launch revealed this foam striking Columbia's left wing panel creating a nearly 10 inch hole. On Feb. 1, 2003, the shuttle made its usual landing approach to the Kennedy Space Centre after a 16 day mission. At 8.59 a.m, a call came in from the shuttle where rick Husband was only able to say “Roger” before connection was lost. 12 minutes later, a mission controller received a call stating the shuttle was breaking up in the sky. 2) Apollo 1 NASA The launch of as-204 was scheduled for February 21st of 1967 which was to make the first time a three person crew would be launched into orbit. But the launch never happened. On January 27, 1967, a routine test was done. After entering, the cab was pressurized and filled with 100% pure oxygen. Then, As the crew ran through their 5check list, tragedy struck. A voltage spike turned the pure oxygen into flames burning all men alive. 3) Challenger NASA Despite warnings and not wanting yet another delay, at 11:39 a.m on Jan 28, 1986, The challenger lifted off From the Kennedy Space Centre in Cape Canaveral with 7 crew members on board. Initially, The launch appeared successful for over a minute. No one could believe what happened next. At 73 seconds into the flight, Hundreds of spectators watched in terror along with millions of viewers on live TV as the spacecraft burst into a giant fireball at 65,000 feet in the air. Disintegrating into thousands of pieces before plunging into the atlantic ocean at over 200 miles per hour, all 7 crew members were killed 4) Soyuz 1 Vladimir Komarov Nn April 23, 1967 the Soyuz 1 took off with Vladimir Komarov inside as his best friend Yuri Gagarin (first man in space) watched. Both men knew the Soyuz had 203 issues and Komarav was likely going to die. After its 13th orbit, the mission was aborted and as the capsule re-entered, its parachutes failed. It hit the ground at nearly 100mph. 5) Balloonists Drown NASA Testing Mark IV full pressure body suits as part of Project RAM, pilots Malcolm Ross and Victor Prather flew the Strato Lab V over 113,000 feet into the air. After landing in the Gulf Of Mexico, the two had were rescued by helicopter. However, Prather fell into the ocean. Having had opened his face mask earlier, the suit filled with water dragging him under as he drowned.
