Edo Berger: Gamma-Ray Bursts: The Biggest Explosions Since the Big Bang
About | Information | History | Online | Facts | Discovery
Representing nature's biggest explosions since the Big Bang itself, gamma-ray bursts were first accidentally spotted in the 1960s by Department of Defense satellites hunting for terrestrial nuclear blasts. In this talk Prof. Berger describes the ensuing decades-long quest to decipher the origin and energy source of these mysterious explosions. He explains how gamma-ray bursts are now used to probe the first generation of stars and galaxies formed less than a billion years after the Big Bang.

Hi i am Maldini Andrade the young mathematician.I would like to know if you can help me to publish my works.I made equation and formulas that solve nth deegre equations. One formula can't solve infinite equations and much more please contact me.My emails etetiandrocerquei@gmail.com.I am from Africa Angola im 18 years old.

From 57:20 to 57:50, Berger mentions that we see about 1% of all gamma ray bursts due to how narrowly focused the beams are. That translates to most of the energy being focused into 3.6 degrees(1.8 degrees on one end and 1.8 degrees on the opposite), right? Is there any more detail on how precisely those beams are focused or how laser-like those beams are? Did that figure come from computer simulations or what?

WR-aiah104 explains Jeremiah 25:30-33, as well a numerous other prophecies in the bible, [e.g., Isaiah 2:21-22, 26:21*, 28:22, 66:4*, 15*, Amos 5:18-20, Isaiah 50:10-11, Micah 7:1-7 & Isaiah 59:9-13****Communism is definitely EVIL (many people picking on one poor man, trying to damn innocent blood, a company of DRUNKEN JUDGES, who take bribe to acquit the guilty and condemn the innocent [forgive them not, for they slay their own people, [Psalm 109:15-18, Psalm 35:20].
Someone help me to spread this IMPORTANT MESSAGE---take a full page ad in the NEW YORK TIMES, with three-inch letters, replication ALL OF PSALM 11 [it condemns communism, as did BOTH Moses & Jesus--Deuteronomy 27:24 and Mark 3:28-30; they said God God had a "bad" or HELLISH SPIRIT--which is the UNFORGIVABLE SIN! I call upon a wealthy and a righteous Muslim from Saudia-Arabia to do this for me.
COMMMUNISTS ARE ALL CURSED, which means they can NEVER ENTER HEAVEN--or inherit the eternal life promised by Jesus.
S H A L O M . . . .(Isaiah 57, last verses). -
51:10 The Fermi gamma ray observatory detected a weak short GRB 0.4 seconds after aLIGO's detection of Gravity Waves from merging black holes last September 14th, from the same general area of the sky, which may be the burst from the aLIGO detection. It's uncertain at this time. But there should be plenty more opportunities.

06:45 So, for 6 years the military kept important science which we paid for with our tax dollars secret from the scientific community for no real reason.

Fantastic lecture. thank you very much for sharing.

Interesting talk.
By the way, the Big Bang was not an explosion. It was an adiabatic expansion. The whole universe expanded at the same rate as its component fundamental fields and developing materials inside it, from the genesis moment through the Planck epoch, and through the inflation period, until it slowed at the beginning of the so-called "Dark Age". Before the genesis moment, absolutely no supporting system existed.
Dark energy acceleration expansion didn't appear until much later, several hundreds of thousands of years after the genesis event (triggering the entire cosmological trimeline).
Dark energy and the Dark Age are not to be confused. The Dark Age was before the universe cooled enough for atoms to form.
An explosion expands rapidly relative to a much larger, established environment. When the universe expanded as a single system, with supporting fundamental fields and all, from a rapidly enlarging, quantum gravity-dominated Planck epoch to what it is now, it was never an explosion. Stars explode, and with extreme power, such as in Wolf-Rayet type gamma ray burst events, but never the universe itself. -
Outstanding!

Pretty dead crowd!!
I think this guy is great. -
Why can't every introduction be that concise?
-
this guy says "dis" not this,,,,and "oder" not other,,,,quite annoying
-
if I ever meet a guy who mumbles the last 4 words of every sentence, I am going to kick his ass so hard
-
... Google "harvard big bang" and it asks if you meant "Howard big bang" ... >.<

Lecture begins at 2:00

I just want to thank Harvard and Prof. Berger for making this video available.
