Easy Deep Sky Astrophotography without a telescope. Part 3-Processing
About | Information | History | Online | Facts | Discovery
This video is the third part of a 3 part series that shows you how to take pictures of deep space objects using only a DSLR camera on a static tripod without a telescope or tracking mount. In this video the image of the Whirlpool galaxy is processed using a novel method. This is the easiest way I have found to process the pictures using free or readily available software. If you prefer to use Photoshop or GIMP, a video can be found on the website detailing the processing steps. For Part 1 and 2 of the guide please visit http://www.learnastronomyhq.com which will show you how to take the pictures using just a DSLR and how to stack the pictures.

I have yet to get DSS to work for me. Program runs but no image is created after hours of stacking

Nice image and tutorial - especially considering no tracking! Would you share your exposure settings? I'm assuming you must have used a very high iso to capture the image without star trailing. Thanks.

where is the video for photoshop stacking?

I have a problem in my process... I used 55mm focal length... I shot 8 sec each 60 light 30 dark and 15 offset frames and then i stacked all those by using DSS. But the stars in my pictures are not saturated... looks like B/W.... can you guide me how to get saturated image

Nope. No part 4. Remember this is taken without any telescope or tracking mount so the galaxy is only a few pixels wide which really limits what you can achieve in processing. The website includes other processing videos that are more "traditional" in approach using Photoshop or GIMP.

Is there a part 4 to detail what you do after that? Or do you stick with a slightly blurred image from the de-noise?

Yep. I can't post a link here but it's at /learnastronomyhq
