1944 - US Destroyers Hull, Spence & Monaghan sink in Typhoon Cobra (Philippines) Because of 100 mph (160 km/h) winds, very high seas and torrential rain, three destroyers capsized and sank, and 790 lives were lost. Nine other warships were damaged, and over 100 aircraft were wrecked or washed overboard; the aircraft carrier Monterey was forced to battle a serious fire that was caused by a plane hitting a bulkhead
1957 - An F4 tornado followed part of the path carved by the famed Tri-State Tornado through Jackson, Williamson, and Franklin counties in Illinois, killing 11 people. The storm was notable because it occurred so far north so late in the year. 10 people died at Murphysboro, IL. Further south, five separate tornadoes that cause F2 and F3 damage in St. Francois County in Missouri and Randolph and Madison Counties in Illinois

The temperature at Dodge City did not rise above 4°F until Christmas day when the temperature rose to 12°F. This was the coldest December of record by far for Dodge City since records were begun in 1874
1998 - Atlanta, GA recorded its latest first freeze on record, while across the southwest desert, Palm Springs, CA set a record high with 86°F

2009 - Heavy rainfall in the Peruvian Andes produced flooding and landslides in the city of Ayacucho. At least 9 people died as a torrent of mud swept through the city destroying dozens of homes and businesses -
