Goodbyes are always hard, especially ones like this.

Captain Picard's last thought after Chief O'Brien was beamed to DS9 was there goes another of my children all grown up and leaving the nest.Damn how many more time must I go through this..
-
This was a poor scene. O'Brien just wants to get on with things, and Picard can't think of anything overly special to say, other than ... "this was your favourite transporter room" ... come on ... Star Trek is amazing ... but this was a poorly written scene.
-
Wait a sec. If they're docked with DS9, why use the transporter?
-
It's telling when the captain of a starship will personally beam someone to a location. The scene was rather dry, but that alone was a sign of huge respect on Picard's part.
-
They almost kissed!
-
O'brien: It's just a transporter room (humble bragging)
Picard nods emphatically (yup, unremarkable in any way)
O'brien subtle double take (wow, I really was a nobody) -
Man this is why Captain Picard will always be my captain.
-
Maybe they cut it because it was too dry. After O'Brien's years of service, all he gets is the captain pushing some buttons on a console to send him off. No handshake, no thank yous, just two stilted guys.

obrien is such an idiot
-
Is Obrien passed at Picard or something? Picard is being all nice and trying to give a nice goodbye and Obrien is just like whatever hurry and beam me away.
-
"It's just a transporter room sir" translate to "Stop being a bitch, I'm glad Sisko is way cooler.
-
O'Brien is the Boba Fett of Star Trek. No character development until he turned into a fan favorite. I'm glad he carried over to DS9 even though that was my least favorite series.

They couldn't spring for Riker on the bridge. It would have been better if they could have got the whole crew in on it. Maybe Geordi could have helped him get set up on the station. What would have been really Ironic is Worf saying, "It has been an honor severing with you" and O'Brian replying, "You too, maybe someday we serve together again." There are allot of missed opportunities, they should have had the Enterprise E server in the Dominion war getting the TNG crew back together. The new movies they could have filmed TOS episodes with the new crew, to get them in character and then add effects to make them cannon episodes in the JJ universe. The Voyager should have kept all the damage she got, with quick and dirty repairs. Like the Enterprise in Star Trek III. So many things I would have done differently.

what a promotion. the chief transporter officer of some lowly transporter #3 to the chief engineer of deep space nine.

I thought I remembered seeing this scene! Thank for posting this! There was so much mutual respect, they didn't need many words.
-
Very typical of the later Star Trek series. Little serious connection between the various officers; practically no marriages, children, or serious romances that actually go somewhere; passing friendships that are merely stoic, etc. Spock was more demonstrative than most of the later characters.
-
People try really hard to break this down, but truth is, this was a lousy ass goodbye...

I know they did it for dramatic effect. Did you ever wonder why O'brien didn't just leave from where the Enterprise was docked on to DS9? Great scene though
