DIY Solar Panel System: The Real Cost Of Solar Power
About | Information | History | Online | Facts | Discovery
http://BackwoodsSolar.com - How much does a solar panel system cost? How many panels do you need? How much power can you generate? What can you run on a solar panel system? Where can I go to get my questions answered? Can I really go off-grid using solar panels and a battery bank? Can you generate enough power to sell back to the power company and make money? I address these and other questions relating to the real cost of solar power.

Check InpliX handbook if you want to make it cheaper and better.

I bought instruction from inplix and I built it very cheap.

THEY MUST BE RETARDED TO PAY 30-40.000 $ ON THAT... TELL YOU WHAT, I PAY 10.000$ ON ELECTRONICS SCHOOL AND THEN ACHIEVE MATERIALS AND ASSEMBLY IT FOR FREE- STILL WAY MORE CHEAPER THAN.... WHAT??? 40K$ THATS.... HOOOOH, BOY YOU MUST BE A RETARD, I TELL YOU THAT.

Good advice to add solar after you have done everything else. With an EMP you are likely to loose it even with stuff put into a Farday cage.

I live in Las Vegas, NV and I use in a Mouth what you use in a 5 days . or 460 k a mouth here. hope you fine out wee it all going your watts.

I can second Backwoods Solar. I have had great experiences with them.
That being said they are a little high and you may want to shop around. -
I have a natural gas water heater, clothes dryer and stove. Energy efficient light bulbs/LED all thru out the house and only use 312 kWt per month so it does make a big difference in how much electricity I need everyday.
-
Do you use LED light bulbs? This may add to your savings.
-
What? you made it almost sound like when you installed the solar panel your bill increased

I appreciate these series of videos, they are the most thorough & compact available on in YouTube. I got a question, however, regarding the cost benefit of embarking on such mission - that question is: Is saving, as it would be in most cases in the northeast, 30% on your electricity bill worth it by running your home 5hrs per day on Solar energy worth it? Is it even possible? This summer my home consumed, in one month, 500kWh which is about 17kWh per day. Setting up a solar system that could supply 5kWh per day, based on a system that stores 16.8 kWh or 30% of its charge, seems to offer savings that are not too shabby.
-
Come and live in Brisbane, Australia, and you will pay 30.811 cents/kWh plus a 'supply charge' of 91.751 cents/day for electricity!
If you have grid connected solar the electricity retailer pays you 8 cents/kWh feed-in-tariff. After watching your videos I will be building my own small off-grid system to partly reduce my power consumption. -
I haven't done a thing to convert my home to solar other than study/research. Thanks for your 'practical use' opinion on solar. It confirms my research. I looked into a basic system to 'time share' some electrical devices in a black out scenario. After I totaled up the cost of all solar equipment required and dividing it by the cost of what I pay per KWH, I could pay the utility company my avg monthly bill for 11 years to break even.

You are absolutely correct!!! Good Job!!

great info lds thanks . you by far are the best on you tube for a straight up explanation of the facts on solar you have helped me alot being that i know nothing about solar and want to build a system . thanks for the facts and links

Get a grid tie inverter 2k that outputs to your home's grid so you can lower your bill and still use solar all the time, why only use solar for when the power goes out. You can setup your system to both recharge your batteries and once they are full output to your home grid to lower you electric bills. Put in a switch that once your batteries reaches full charge it flips a relay to power your home grid and lower your bills, the best of both worlds

that's very cheap pwr. bill.. I pay 12.5 cents/kwh. I built my own 5 kw./day system for 900 dollars. I did lot of shopping around and found the prices varied greatly. If you take the time to shop around you can save a huge amount of money. My mppt controller and my panels were bought separately because the difference in price from one place to another was massive for the same product.

Love your videos but you really missed the boat on your calculations. When you are showing the solar system prices you say for example a it is 15000 dollars to produce 3 kilowatts per day. The unit given is kwh which is how much is produced per hour at peak performance not per day. You need to multiply that by hours of sunshine per day (alowing for reduced production in morning and night) to get the kilowatts per day. Same mistake when you calculate how much you could make off of selling your electricity to the power company. A 10 kwh system could easily produce 50-70 kilowatts a day or 1500 kw or more a month during the summer in the right area. Not saying solar power is cheap by any means but it is far more cost effective than you are making it sound and I dont want people to give up on a good idea because of misinformation.

You are a lucky bastard. I live in SW Georgia and our power bill runs 400-500 a month. We can't get natural gas or anything.
-
methinks you need more panels. :)
golden rule #1 of solar: get rid of anything that makes heat from electricity.
golden rule #2 of solar: forget about running the big air conditioning units - 115v window units are the ticket. -
I need to move to Houston. Our utility companies all charge "delivery fees" which is an add-on of 35-50% of the monthly bill. That means a $100 natural gas bill also adds a $48 "delivery fee". It's supposed to be for "infrastructure improvements" which no one has seen anywhere. Welcome to Indiana, where the utility companies evidently own the state utility commission (who approves these charges).
