DIY Solar Panel System: Components, Cost & Savings
About | Information | History | Online | Facts | Discovery
Here I share with you every component I use for my DIY solar panel system, where you can buy it and how much I paid. I cover my solar panels, wiring, solar panel charge controller, DC/AC inverter, ANL fuses, Kill-A-Watt meter, 6 Volt golf car batteries, basically every component that you will need to build your own DIY solar panel system and save money. - Grape Solar 250 Watt Monocrystalline Solar Panel: http://amzn.to/2aGl73X - BZ 500 MPPT500 Watt PV Charge Controller: http://www.bzproducts.net - 6Volt Rayovac Ultra Pro Golf Car Battery: http://www.batteriesplus.com/product/33332-SLIGC110-6-volt-Battery/574-SLI/6067-Golf-Cart-Batteries/133277-E--Z--GO/TXT/TXT.aspx - Samlex PST-150S-24A 1500-watt 24V Pure Sine Wave Inverter: http://amzn.to/2aHyx2N - Battery Tender 24 Volt Battery Charger: http://amzn.to/2b1UgmU - Battery Saver Desulfator: http://amzn.to/2aVn0g2 - 24" Starter to Switch Battery Cable: http://amzn.to/2aVngLV - 6 AWG Multi Strand Copper Wire, 60 Feet: http://amzn.to/2aN3tzb - 4'x8' 1/2" Plywood for Battery Box: http://www.homedepot.com/Lumber-Composites-Plywood-Sheathing-Subfloor-Plywood-Plywood-Sheathing/h_d1/N-5yc1vZbu0g/R-100041308/h_d2/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10053&langId=-1&storeId=10051#.UDf216Ot3PY - 2-1/2 in. Can you say redundant....god, you repeat yourself far to much then you treat your listeners to 5th grade level conversation....try again....
-
dude. thank you so much for your time.

Nice

LDS Prepper, are the fuses 35 watt or 35 amp fused. Thanks for the video, very well done
-
Nice work you doing. I have few questions
(1) I used a 12 AWG cable for connecting my solar pannel to my charge controller?
Can I use that same 12 AWG cable for connecting my charge controller to my 200AH battery?
(2) what size circuit breaker in amps can I use on the positive side between my battery (200AH) and my inverter (1500 watt pure sine wave) -
Thank you very much I have been thinking about going solar this will give me a good idea of what I am getting into.

I am a 27 year licensed electrician and the wiring, design and installation violate just about every electric code there is for PV systems. This guy has the concept but had no clue on how to properly install a safe system. Electricity is not a hobby so have a professional do the work so you do not burn or get seriously hurt, possibly die.

Faraday cages don't work my bloke tests them all that have been on the net and I'm getting pissed at him for constantly EMPing my mobile phones his excuse is u us ur phone to much but he does always buy me a new phone but people have to stop coming up with these faraday cages ideas they don't work over 30 phones is proof enough for me I've gone back to diary because he keeps murdering my phones he has shut down the whole house everything broke and he said a real EMP would be about 70.000 plus times more powerful than the tesler thingy he has made even blacked out the street and caused the neighbors bother with their electricals suprised he is not in jail or killed buy the nieghbors but he has proved his point as far as I'm concerned so in looking up these solar systems things coz I'm leaving his ass

I like the video. But would you not be able to be repaid by having this run your house a few days at a time? And the savings could pay for you rto have another set of electronics for your Faraday cage.

I'm curious if you switched your power over to the "time of day" that your local power company offers? I'm considering it too, but not sure if it works with a net meter
-
EMP. Only person I've ever heard prepare for that with an F-gage ... that's pretty dope, dude.

First, thank you for the concise explanation of your system. How are the batteries working out for you?
I see a lot--a LOT--of fuses in these solar panel systems. I am curious to know what the advantage of fuses are compared to breakers in a solar system. You can get 20 to 200 amp breakers pretty cheap and a small box to connect them through.
Are the fuses a cost saving measure on the front end or is there something I'm missing, like fuses are required for code? Is is actually easier to deal with popping fuses with this setup than with tripping breakers for some reason? I always understood that fuses were better for cars because they were small and compact but that for a house electrical system a breaker would always be preferred because you can simply trip it on and off. -
Wondering why you chose 24v rather than the common 12v?

Good way to go - golf cart batteries are pretty economical, used them before. Just finished a new solar install here which is a real upgrade taking advantage of solar incentives. Here we went with the Fork lift batteries which I highly recommend - they can really handle the charge/discharge cycles and had the lowest cost per kW. Just put up the 2nd video in the Relentless Homestead Solar Power "Star-Lite Wars" series - this one shows the battery box build.
Nice video as you hit an number of points to those considering a small system - everyone should be looking at some kind of solar power - it is so SWEET! -
You want some good surplus equipment - go to a local amateur radio swap meet (aka a HamFest). You can probably find any wire you need there, plus some of the other things in his list.
BTW, solar panels are MUCH cheaper now than listed in his spreadsheet. -
If your solar panels are connected to your charge controllers, then any impulse that hits the wiring that enters that system (from the solar panels) will also fry those charge controllers. The only way a faraday cage works is if no wires leave that faraday cage.
