DIY Portable Solar Power Generator Part 3
About | Information | History | Online | Facts | Discovery
This is the third installment in my series of videos about my DIY Portable Solar Power Generator design. This video will highlight some modifications and new features I have added over the past year and point out some finishing touches. I will also explain in more detail how I wired the DC/AC inverter to the 110 AC outlet in the shallow box including discussion of how the AC ammeter's CT (current transformer) was installed.

Just wanted to pop in and say thank you for taking the time to make these videos. The bit about wiring the AC outlet was exactly the info I need. I'm just curious, is the fuse needed if your inverter already has one? Beautiful setup by the way!

Hi Jim, Nice work. One modification I would suggest is to add terminal blocks. This would eliminate the need to run so many wires to the +/- battery terminals and would clean up the wiring. Similar model as a home breaker box.

Not sure why the need for a "generator " or really the AC inverter to boat or camp, do you need to run a microwave? Probably anything you want or need to power camping or boating can be 12 volt even TVs and DVD players, hair dryers, lights, crock pots etc. all way more efficient than converting 12 volt to AC. On the boat you could have added a second or third battery probably in the same compartment as the original battery add an isolator to prevent the main battery from over discharging preventing engine starting. Having plenty of 12V power and freeing the tiny Cuddy floor of the 100 lb black box. I admire your craftsmanship it was a nice project and don't want to take away from skills I just don't understand the need for such? One other thing the tiny trickle charge is too small for two deep cell battery's connected. It's one amp or less maybe only .75 amp and may not even keep them topped off if fully charged let alone recharge them from being drained at the lake or the tent site.

Jim why are you criss-crossing your main battery wires over each other, That's a no-no,and in your explanation of your wiring of your AC plug, you said black to negative white to positive that's backwards, white is common, black is hot that's AC. Auto wiring however black can be negative or ground ,red positive most of the time

I was watching several of these videos prior to starting my own project and I can't believe that you are not a professional. You could buy in bulk and make these to sell. I have seen a lot of homemade projects and looking at this, if you didn't tell me I would assume you bought it. The signs indicating what each output/input is (where did you have them made?), the way it is made, every little detail. I think you have some experience with crafting of something. The average person would not do such a fantastic job. Your three videos (which I emailed to myself) have changed my original idea. Are you available for consult? Hope you don't mind if I copy yours. It probably will not be as professional as yours but I hope to copy detail for detail and duplicate this. You could sell the plans for this online very easily. Draw them up once and send them electronically online. Ten dollars would be almost giving them away but would help those of us on a tighter budget. Thank you so much for explaining every step and actually showing everything as yoiu did. I honestly have never seen a better DIY project on youtube.

Best DIY solar generator I have seen yet. Would be helpful for us slow guys if you could maybe post a step by step of the build. For example, exact wiring and how you did it, any specialty tools that you used, proper sizing of grommets and tie downs. It would be a lot of work to do so, but also would be very helpful. Thanks for the great work.

This is great! Thank you for sharing. Could you tell me where you purchased the 110 AC outlets with the covers? Having trouble finding something similar. Thank you.

Well done, looks extremely tidy! It has inspired me to copycat 👍🏻😎

I'm going to be using the same box for my build, assuming that my battery and inverter fit with room for the exterior outlet, and I was wondering how the bottom holds up to the weight?
Did you reinforce the bottom with a extra layer?
also thanks for the videos and schematic. -
this is awesome, I guess the next challenge is how to make it lighter.
-
Yours is honestly one of the nicest diy builds that I have seen thus far. Grat job. In the video, you start to describe any changes you would make. You spoke of potential for a third battery. Are there any other changes that you would like to make?

Thanks for your the info on how you wired your panels.
The mount you referring to looks good but They won't ship to the UK, so I've decided on Anderson powerpole mount instead. You was right about the drop in power with the thin SAE cable. I only have a 50w flexible solar panels use mc4 connections that came with the panel and I'm getting 12-13amp from inside my window of my room when the suns out. I've found your project very inspirational and modeled my project of of some of your ideas. It's all coming together nicely. I'll post some photos when it's complicated, maybe do a short video.
I would like to see how you wired the two fans at the back.
I've got similar ones but the wire connections are strange to me. -
BEAUTIFUL!! and again i say you could TOTALLY build these and sell them............id buy one!
-
Starting my build based off yours! Best DIY generator I've seen.
-
Very thorough walk-though, thanks!

Bravo sir ,some beautiful ingenuity and craftsmanship ,have been research this topic and this is by far the most ergonomic setup, and i cant say enough about your presentation ,truly professional!!
-
Ac as no positive or negative. black is live and white is reset , green is ground.........The red and black wires in dc application, should keep seperated, not crossing one over the other..... Considered dangerus...... or add ceramic spacers........

great. :)
