Apsidal Precession (Perihelion Precession). Created by Sal Khan. This is the last video in our Cosmology and Astronom subject! Now move on to our first video in Computing: https://www.khanacademy.org/computing/computer-programming/programming/intro-to-programming/v/programming-intro=Computing Missed the previous lesson? https://www.khanacademy.org/science/cosmology-and-astronomy/life-earth-universe/life-in-universe-topic/v/detectable-civilizations-in-our-galaxy-4?utm_source=YT&utm_medium=Desc&utm_campaign=cosmologystronomy Cosmology & Astronomy on Khan Academy: The Earth is huge, but it is tiny compared to the Sun (which is super huge). But the Sun is tiny compared to the solar system which is tiny compared to the distance to the next star. Oh, did we mention that there are over 100 billion stars in our galaxy (which is about 100,000 light years in diameter) which is one of hundreds of billions of galaxies in just the observable universe (which might be infinite for all we know). Don't feel small. We find it liberating. Your everyday human stresses are nothing compared to this enormity that we are a part of. Enjoy the fact that we get to be part of this vastness! About Khan Academy: Khan Academy offers practice exercises, instructional videos, and a personalized learning dashboard that empower learners to study at their own pace in and outside of the classroom. We tackle math, science, computer programming, history, art history, economics, and more. Our math missions guide learners from kindergarten to calculus using state-of-the-art, adaptive technology that identifies strengths and learning gaps. We've also partnered with institutions like NASA, The Museum of Modern Art, The California Academy of Sciences, and MIT to offer specialized content. For free. For everyone. Forever. #YouCanLearnAnything Subscribe to Khan Academy’s Cosmology & Astronomy channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UChNPnEkW8LYZ5Rwi8_A2-DA?sub_confirmation=1 Subscribe to Khan Academy: https://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=khanacademy

my opinion is that we are way, way to early to complain that we haven't detected anything. we have only been searching for, what, 50 years? that's nothing. zilch. we have to little time and, with a very probable combination of all the other reasons, we have just scratched the tip of the iceberg of this issue.

He was.

It's no responsibility what so ever, even if we were the only species around here. When we extinc, you think the universe will give a single fuck? :-p Btw i find it more scary if we would not be the only civilization around this neighberhood. You never know the intentions of the other species...

now u need to create a warp drive ;) lol

Happy 2013!

I don't believe it is likely that there are civilizations near the galactic core. Radiation would sterilize any chance of life.

What about the galactic habitable zone? It (sadly) reduces the number of potentially habitable stars by at least another 0.2 rate from my knowledge.

It's impossible to go faster than light because nature will slow you down when you gat close to light speed. This is also a form of time travel because the world around you is going in normal speed while you are in slow speed. But this also prevents us from traveling long distances.

You need better tags on the vids

For those interested in the Fermi paradox (ie why we're not seeing any other civilizations out there), I can recommend Stephen Baxters manifold trilogy, a supreme work of hard science fiction.
-
seems like there would be alot of radiation in the center of the galaxy

lol .5? Is that like an extraterrestrial Somalia? Sorry, had to do it. Also, what doesn't he know? I"d like to find out.

i find the idea there are no other civilaztions in our galaxy very chilling and scary, So many worlds dead and without life but this one little blue ball in the darkness, Thats alot of responsibility to be the last and only living planet in this galaxy, to think we can't even get our act together as a species boy is life fuck or what? :(
