Damn, takes me back. i remember the rock stations in the late 60's/early 70's playing a goodly amount of jazz too, this, Gabor Szabo, and others. Radio got so bland. Tasty stuff this.

Billy Cobham on drums & percussion explains a lot about why this piece is so memorable and incredible. His playing has an effect that is similar to Jim Gordon's role in Mason Williams' Classical Gas. The Unsung Heros. Without their incredible contribution to the pieces, they wouldn't have been hits or the masterpieces they are. Truly, the backbone and driving forces..

An unprecedented production and in my opinion unsurpassed to this very day. Brilliant, breathtaking, mind altering, a subtle yet dynamic masterpiece of human creation.

This came out of the blue in 1972, and by early 1973 had gone to number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts. Deodato would release a second landmark recording 'Rhapsody in Blue' which failed to go top-40, later in 1973. Seven years later he would produce his biggest production, 'Celebration' for Kool and the Gang', which went to number 1.
I would meet the conga player on this, Airto Moreira, also from Brazil (Eumir Deodato de Almeida, his full name, was from Rio, and there are Deodatos in Parana state at least there today). I would meet Airto when he came to Tucson for a fundraiser for KXCI 91.7 (then, now on 91.3) which they did for a fundraiser for the station. I am the person who came up with the station call letters, still in use 34 years after they were given to the station. The station these days is a 'triple-A' format but has some of the original programs still running and a massive music library with all sorts of things in it thanks to several early donors during construction. -
Me likey.

Love this theme song 2001
This had to be early 80's -
I thought I recognized Billy Cobham's drum playing. So I checked it out. And sure enough it's him. This was the first smooth jazz I was ever exposed to at the ripe young age of 12. I didn't know it then. I just thought it was cool. But now I know why.
