Debunking the Biggest BETTA FISH Myths
About | Information | History | Online | Facts | Discovery
Happy Betta in a PUDDLE!? Lets find out! Often people use the puddle myth to justify confining Bettas in small jars and containers. They are told that because Bettas "live in small puddles" then they are "happy" being held in a cup or a vase. In reality.. only a small amount of Bettas are actually trapped in puddles in the dry season.. those that are try to escape by jumping and those that cannot starve or die from their own toxins from their waste. As pet owners we need to DO BETTER then the bare minimum. We need to provide space, clean filtered water, and a stable heat source. These fish deserve the best care we can provide. When doing water changes for your pet betta keep in mind: If your water has a high level of chlorine in it, you may need to add a drop of declorinator to the tap water before adding it to the tank or bowl. And never use soap or disinfectants to clean off fish ornaments or decorations. This will harm the fish. Good care will help prevent a betta fish from dying. Can my male betta thrive in a 5 gallon tank or should I move him to my 55 gallon tank with my goldfish? Will my betta be hostile towards my goldfish?
-
My male betta lives in a 3.5 gallon, they are actually surprisingly cheap so I have no clue why people use that as an excuse! Like you wouldn't buy a dog if you didn't have enough money to buy it stuff! Like most tanks come with a filter, and heaters are like 20$ and their food lasts FOREVER since they don't eat a lot! My tank was 30$! Please DO NOT purchase any animal unless you are ready to give this animal the proper living environment!

Let me know in the comments, do you have a Betta fish? What is its name? -
I have a male beta fish that lived all its live with a bunch of platy fish. He outlived them all and didn't even care about when they breed and never touched the small fishes. Then they grew up and the betta is starting to look old, so I thought well I will try two female betas to spice up the place and see if he will have some fun on his old days. I thought the female wouldn't be very aggressive but I was wrong. They started to kill the platy fish really fast so I removed them to a tank by themself. The old male beta didn't even care about them as I guess he is to old for that stuff these days. I hope I can put the female betas back with the platys some day as I would prefer to have a male beta by himself in the small tank they are currently in for later breeding. You can read lots of advices but some things seems to work for some and not for others.

Thank you for two things:
1: Excellent and important information on proper betta keeping practices.
2: Pronouncing betta correctly. Drives me absolutely starkers hearing people pronounce it " bay-ta". -
Mine lives in a 40 Gallon breeder with 4x filtration.

When I was a kid I had a Betta we named Fire Ball. We kept him in a vase, but it was a large one with a squat base that was about a foot wide and held about two gallons of water. We were able to get various plants that kept the water clean and give him good hiding spots. He seemed like a happy fish. he never tried to jump out and always kept his beautiful color. He lived for 5 years.
