Good conversation! I do not agree with just one thing, that the sun is a few miles away! It is obvious from the baloon videos, that even wen at 100-300k feets the sun is still above the observation point, may be just a few hundred or thousand miles above the ground. It's not possible to be in front of the clouds. It is an illusion that from the brightnes of the light, clouds looks like disappearing, kind a transparent. I think it is about perspective.
