They ought to de-activate the translator to the Abe/Obama visit to Pearl Harbor.

Anyone else feel sorry for HAL? Not shitting on Dave for deactivating him, but in HAL's defense he had unclarified orders that didn't specify keeping the crew alive and chose the most efficient route, like computers do. He wasn't programmed with morals. HAL isn't just some cold piece of machinery, he's personified extensively in the sequel "2010" to the point that he's obviously sentient, even asking if he will dream when he dies.
HAL begging for his life is just so eerie and sad. Kubrick really nailed making the audience feel sympathy and empathy for a non-human, artificial intelligence that murdered it's crew, using the fear of mortality to build a bridge between the character and the viewer, it's brilliant. I wouldn't put it past Kubrick if HAL was trying to lie to Dave by acting like he was rebooted and singing for him before deactivation, as a pathetic last attempt to save his life. -
its a very chilling scene. Then David almost changes his mind as he realizes hes millions of miles away from Earth and Alone... but HAL was unpredictable at that point and it was his only option to remove the AI from the ships systems.

This is how some fucked up relationships end..

I love the way HAL keeps retrying the same lines with slightly different wording and tone. It's like he's going down a checklist of things that might get a human to feel sympathy. But of course he's talking to the most robotic man alive; an astronaut chosen for a deep-space mission because of his bland, stable personality.

I like the way the deactivation sequence is filmed from all perspectives to show that there is no up , down , walls or floors in space.

I was a kid when I first saw this, and up until this point, Hal was literally the most terrifying thing I had ever encountered. Then this scene came, and as it begged for it's life, even still, near the end, devoid of emotion... I started to be scared of Dave. I still don't know why, but when i saw the camera, I was a monster, and when I saw Dave's face, I saw a monster.

Such an amazing movie. Watching it after smoking a couple bowls and getting high was honestly life changing. Made me want to pursue art and cinema.

It's a very frightening scenario. You are racing against time to disable the microprocessor brain from controlling all systems on the spaceship and acting like a giant murderous killer robot. (fail safe switch to manual mode)
-
I remember seeing this for the first time, convinced that Gene Wilder did the voice of Hal.

This is a girl you were getting more and more enthused about suddenly breaking up with you and deep down you know why suddenly but you will lie beg and bargain to keep it going.
-
poor HAL, he was just scared
-
this looks like some incredible realistic documentary from future
-
This movie looks better than 99% of the shit we have today.

How the fuck did I get here?

Hey Hollywood, you don't always need background music to convey emotion. This movie is almost 50 years old and this is still some of the best drama/suspense ever directed - no BGM required.
-
This movie made me appreciate the power of background music in other movies.

What a scene, I must buy this on Blu Ray.
