Create your own Solar System | Live Experiment with Huw James | Head Squeeze
About | Information | History | Online | Facts | Discovery
For World Space Week Huw demonstrates the formation of our Solar System in a really cool live experiment that you can do at home! Simply take an empty plate and place a little bit of water onto it. Get the water swirling around and now drop some pepper in there. You can see the pepper rotating and this represents all the rocky material in the solar system. As you continuing swirling it, you'll notice that all the bits of pepper begin to accrete towards the middle and that's exactly what happened in our solar system. All the rocky material moved towards the centre creating rocky planets, such as the earth. The sun first ignited about five billion years ago and sent out a shockwave, sending gas past all the terrestrial planets. To show this get some washing detergent, place it in right in the centre and you'll see the shockwave effect with the pepper. If you tried this, tell us how it went with your live experiment in the comments below. Give us a thumbs up, share with your friends and don't forget to subscribe to Head Squeeze for more brilliant experiment videos from Huw and the team. Have you seen aliens? They might not be as far away as you think according to Timandra: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sue_esAhcUI&feature=c4-overview-vl&list=PLMrtJn-MOYmdbPmMYmArKa-LPIQmeicJB Our resident science demo thrill-seekers will give the YouTube audience their big science treat each week with an experiment where you can find out how to make food dance, power a light bulb with household objects and create mega smoke rings! http://www.youtube.com/user/HeadsqueezeTV http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=HeadsqueezeTV

can you give me the the stuff you said about the plants for my science fair project
-
This is cool... I like the way the detergent makes the pepper go BOOM!
-
funny and CHILDISH.
-
Brilliant! Going to use this with my class <3
-
Can you please explain how the detergent pushes the pepper on the surface away from the center?
-
why washing detergent????
-
What the hell is with headsqueeze commenters ignoring the actual video? First there was the nigger flaming on the bare-filament-in-liquid-hydrogen video and now a marijuana debate on a formation-of-the-solar-system video. Go back to tumbler please.

I've learned that a drop of detergent in a plate with water makes a nice "bang" explosion sound.
-
... is there a cryo-like demonstration of this experiment .., one that shows vaporous trails? ... need more dry ice tricks !
-
Kwl going to do it now!
-
coool
-
what? you dont carry around detergent in your pocket, oh how the other half lives.
-
im talking about implications, a misunderstanding on my part would imply inadequate communication on yours. i just picked up on the phrase "I didn't expect potheads watching these videos" which implies a stereotype which are never good.
-
*BOOM*
-
I tried this experiment at home, but instead of pepper I used pure sodium.
-
well from personal experience "potheads" have been some of the nicer people that i have met, so when someone implies that they are odd or inferior as you implied above it kinda ticks me off. so yes i am proud of myself for standing for those that i would call friends and going against your opinion.

I got your mother pregnant, I think I did something wrong.
