A NASA video from a time of great optimism about space exploration. The Apollo missions were completed and the Space Shuttle program was underway. How soon before cheap and frequent flights to space would allow the construction of O'Neal colonies and mining camps on the Moon? This visionary approach calls for tiered greenhouses in space and unlimited solar power beamed back to Earth... all before the year 2000!

they dont need to be a mile across or spin at exactly 1 rev per minute, the lack of gravity of any kind causes losses that are too hard to take over long terms of time, unless the people out there stay there forever, because trying to add mass back to bones and muscles is hard work. not impossible but hard, so even half speed or half the size of the station they mentioned would be less cost, using expandable modular units like Mr. Bigalow is building, and any gravity in space is better than none, simple as that.

This ended up not happening because the Space Shuttle flight cost ended up 20 times what was projected. Although, with the (expendable) SpaceX Falcon heavy having ten times the payload per $ of the shuttle, which will only get better with reusabillity... this could very well be within reach.

Do you remember what Wernher von Braun said in the 1970s: "We have the knowledge and the will to build manned space stations and a moonbases. Just give us the money..." ;-)
