Chasing Solar Battery Bank Drain Kilowatt Meter
About | Information | History | Online | Facts | Discovery
Our Solar System Battery Bank hasn't been lasting as of late. What we found out, is amazing. I finally picked up a Killo-Watt meter and began checking out all of the 110 volt devices we use and leave plugged in. We added two extra batteries to our Battery Bank. Yet the extra capacity hasn't seemed to last us any longer. We won't be leaving all of our devices plugged in over night any longer. That microwave is nothing, my 6 way, with a remote fan, pc, flat screen, speakers, xbox, tv plugged in was swallowing 80w alone. Tv in standby, PC switched OFF, speakers OFF.
TV pulls 15w coz of fast boot mode i use.
PSU uses 15w i assume coz of usb being live....
Speakers, must still adapt power but switch off on the dc side.
45W right there on 3 devices which arent remote, or in standby, so could be unplugged. Huge waste -
Hahaha,,i posted without reading every one else's posts, most of what i posted has already been suggested, we are a crazy kinda smart us RV,ers :-)
Love the RV cooking show suggestion, again,,i'm not sure if anyone else suggested it,,but very important that you never allow your batteries to get below 50% the results of doing so will eventually damage them, some charge controllers have a setting to warn you of this.
P.S. My first ever Vid will be uploaded pretty soon to my channel,,as soon as i figure out the editing Schmozzle,,,lol
Best as always brother.
Keep it on the shiny side up.

Hi Guy's,
Great vids, Just some helpful advice, and info for ya, Your inverter, will use power just from being plugged in also, and as to any DC voltage devices you have plugged in,( cell phones etc) they themselves have a smaller version of an inverter built into their power blocks (plug module) so they also use power ,just from being plugged in, and also use crazy amounts of wattage to convert AC to DC..... so really you are using two sets of inverters every-time you use one of these.
So, to correct this, it is best to obtain cigarette lighter adapter type cords/plugs, and run them ( cell phones etc) straight from the 12 volt system, as this will take much less power since it does not have to be converted from AC to DC.
This will lower your draw substantially.
As to your Microwave using power during its standby stage, when you open the door to it, the Microwave goes into a safety state, to prevent accidental irradiation, and this also takes up power, if it where me,,i would have the microwave on a separate power switch, and shut the thing right off when not in use,,the only thing your gonna lose out of this will be the correct time on the clock..lol
I hope this helps you out, anything you need in the way of Technical advice,,i will always try and help.
Keep it on the shiny side up Brother.

I am working towards getting on road full time and was wondering if you could do a video on things you find most important to keep and bring into the RV when you downsize from house to RV living, i know i got way too much crap to take but don't have a clue were to begin. Thanks good vids BTW

Great video, a true eye opener! I still live in a sticks and bricks, working and living and our electric bill is crazy. Important lesson 🌞

Get yourself a 12 volt Sig lighter USB charger and charge directly off the battery if you're not hooked up to shore power. You loose a lot of energy in the process of converting 12v to 110v then back to 5v to charge. The fewer conversions you can get away with the more efficient the system. I hadn't thought about it before but I suspect they can't use an LED lamp in a microwave without redesigning the oven. Stray microwaves would probably burn out the LED so you're stuck with the 110v incandescent lamp.

If your going to charge from your batteries don't go through your inverter do it directly form the battery's, as you would in your car. if you have a lap top get the car charger, phone as well, what ever you can plug directly in to 12 volts the better more efficient. and it is amazing like you say how much parasitic current can drain away amp hours from your battery bank., Devices appliances just sitting their tuned off can deplete your battery over time.when we are away form shore power the only time I turn the inverter on is to use the microwave. maybe the vacuum cleaner
