It has various applications; some of them may be interdisciplinary, in science, engineering and technology. A person who wants to pursue his career in physics has got ample opportunities in astronomy & astrophysics, biophysics, meteorology, nuclear physics, medical physics, geophysics, engineering, technology, architecture etc. A career in physics merely depends upon the person’s interest and depth of knowledge in that subject. In India, there are various educational courses for physics like B.Sc. or B. Tech (Bachelor in Science or Technology). There are many interesting post graduation courses like 5 years integrated M. Sc. (Master in Science) or M. Tech. (Master in Technology). Following these, there are few opportunities available for Doctorate degree or Ph. D in Physics. Most of the admissions to these courses take place after successfully passing the screening tests. If not the screening tests, the candidate is required to secure more than or equal to the stipulated percentage in his 12th grade. For B. Tech, JEE score is taken into consideration along with completion of 12th grade. Prestigious institutes like IISc (Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore), TIFR (Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Mumbai), JNU (Delhi), IIST (Indian Institute of Space science and Technology, Thiruvananthapuram), Satyendra Nath Bose National Centre for Basic Sciences, Kolkata provide various courses in Physics. It is also important for candidate to see from where he is completing his education in Physics. In fact, this is one of the criteria during job recruitment. Some distance learning courses by IGNOU (Indira Gandhi Open University) or other distance learning Open Universities are also available for those who are working but wish to learn Physics and get required qualification. There are many foreign universities which are offering brilliant graduation and post graduation courses in Physics. As in foreign universities, especially in the US, more thrust is given upon interdisciplinary education. Universities like John Hopkins, Stanford, Columbia, Cornell, Caltech or University of Maryland are actively providing courses in Physics. Therefore, a candidate can collaborate with other interesting subject along with Physics. For example: Physics with Medical Engineering Some foreign universities even provide online courses in Physics to which, anyone in the world can apply. A Physicist can get job in either academics or in industry. In academics, a candidate can get a job of lecturer, teacher, professor etc. Other jobs are like laboratory technician, librarian etc. In industry or research organisations, a Physicist can get job as a scientist, Atomic technician, Biomedical Engineer, Medical physicist, Geophysicist, Nanotechnologist, Nuclear Physicist, Optics & laser technician, Plasma particle technician, Robotics technician, Space physicist etc. A physicist is employed by research and development centres, industries or educational institutions. Well known institutes are as given below: • Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO) • Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology, Pune • Indian Astro-physics Institute, Bengaluru • Aryabhatta Research Observatory, Nainital • Nuclear Fuel Campus, Hyderabad • Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Mumbai • Institute for Plasma Research, Ahmedabad • Physics Institute, Bhubaneswar • Physical Research Laboratory, Ahmedabad • Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Mumbai • Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO), Bangalore • Saha Institute of Nuclear Physics, Kolkata For more jobs & career information and daily job alerts, subscribe to our channel and support us.
