Brian Cox Particle Physics Lecture at CERN
About | Information | History | Online | Facts | Discovery
A lecture on the development of science of the standard model of high energy particle physics given to some of the CERN faculty for a demonstration of how this kind of complex science should be lectured to those with any level of science/physics background from laypeople to experts who want to keep up with current discoveries outside their field. Professor Brian Cox of Manchester University and contributor to the LHC's ATLAS and LHCb experiments, is one of the best public educators of physics of our time. He has a huge charisma and character to keep an audience's attention to fundamental topics in physics, keeping the sense of wonder but always keeping the real core of the subject intact - which is genuinely hard to do as in the process of teaching a subject like physics either the wonder gets sucked out and replaced with dry rhetoric or else the content gets sucked out and replaced with whimsical nonsense - Professor Cox helps create the balance in the same vein as other great popularizers of physics such as Carl Sagan and Richard Feynman. His talks are always very good and try to include as many people as possible into scientific discovery and the wonders of nature which shape our individual understanding and our civilization into new frontiers. Any of his tv series, including "Wonders of the Solar System", and his books including my favorite "The Quantum Universe: Everything That Can Happen Does Happen", co-authored by Jeff Forshaw are also must haves for any scientist young or old.

great lecture!
-
It would help a great deal if we could see what Brian is pointing to. Perhaps this isn't the best way to see a lecture of his. Thanks.

lame!!
-
Kind of annoying that they were filming Brian when he was explaining the math. Obviously it would make more sense to see what he was pointing at.
-
that picture tell what ever the eye of the beholder wants. i want more work done at the caluder and by others like neil turok before i would say you found something.
-
all theory that cant be proven.
-
You know so little about Earth and now you think you know anything about the Universe lolololol shame you nerd.

Brian says without advancing science and bringing it into the realm of popular culture we could experience homeostasis and possibly even a reverse within what we have as cultural trust. indeed. However, accepting culture determines to what extent we proceed and of late there is a breakdown in what we have developed culturally one could surmise we are getting to a point where the genetic product is sustaining such damage that progress is quistionable. And here I refer to the idea of beuty in maths etc. Up to and including our perception of female pulchritude etc. We have to scientifically accept that what we have inculcated within our genes that had led to the state, mental or phenomenal, that defines" beuty" is very much a variant of what culture has been comprised of over these last millenium.
As we have seen of late where there is a divergence existent culturally as regards actual form, whereby the first great imperative of our species is threatened, ie; homosexual issues, being, perpetuation of our presence on this planet, there are counterproductive forces at work. And if science refuses to accept, due to social engineering that has taken place, such as female hormones administered to cows that resulted in large numbers of baby boys getting born with excessive female traits that totally threw the balance nature had into disarray. Consequently at a given point we had to alter our perception of what people with this condition depicted socially. IE; An innocent individual being persecuted through no fault of their own.
But still presenting a threat, hypothetically. Science here scored an own goal. As with innumerous other developments. But in this case significant inasmuch as cultural dictates were bought into quistion.
Interestingly, the rest of the world , with all of the diversity existent, generally accepts that young men will copulate with most anything. Definitely their own gender, given a chance. And consequently in most other cultures homosrxuality is frowned upon, people accepting what you need are restraints, not an ever more liberal attitude. As of course youth will always all too eagerly want to spread their seed. where ever, whenever. no doubt.
so for the West to actively encourage, which is the point I want to make, is tantamount to an acceptance that we are going to become a kind of 4th world dependancy. As one thing is certain, Brian old cock, and that is what you suggest about possibly a reverse state culturally if we do not advance with our quest for supremacy. Well, at this point in the West that is a given. Inevitable. 2nd law of thermodynamics which I believe you have a passing aquintanceship with. Everything has a tendency to dickey does. As also do John Richard and David. lol.
NO DOUBT.
Anywayz, going beyond the scope of this current missive, science can be used for cultural progress. You're just going about it the wrong way.
Lamentably.
Bringing science within the realm of popular culture?
With what you've allowed to happen for how much longer do you think we will have the finance to do this? Maybe you, being the brilliant man you are, should turn your attention to the economy.
The prime minister and all the rest of the heavies were adamant about what will happen to this country, UK, blah blah blah. just wasted a lot of time here. -
This young man gives me hope for the future.

More Brian Cox fantasy! Lets talk about fantasy particles and build a fantasy collider for billions of dollars that smashes together these fantasy particles! so what r u? The salesman for all these fantasy theories?

Someone tried to throw money into the equation .

I do not envy Dr Cox in this lecture. An audience of peers and an unseen host of curious untrained people. I've given talks to similar mixture of experts and novices. It's REALLY hard to do without talking to the bottoms of shoes of the experts, or over the heads of the novices! It's almost a lose-lose situation.
One thing he does really well is to bring down complex physics to us unwashed masses in a way that we can begin to understand. -
Ah gravity....the great answer for all unsolved questions. Einstein said Tesla was the smartest man alive. And Tesla said Einstein theory was akin to a beggar dressed in purple clothes and made king using dazzling mathematics that obscure truth. “Relativity is a massive deception wrapped in a beautiful mathematical cloak.”

I could listen to this guy talk about breakfast cereal for 12 hours. Hypnotic haha. Seriously tho, brilliant talk!
-
haha, saw my particle physics professor in the audience XD

Brian Cox is a nob head. what a newbe in real realty haha. Brian dose drugs and makes him a drug addict and your all listing to a drug addict.

Brian Cox? More like, brian Cocks xD amirite?
