"Excellent B-29 footage here, showing the aircraft in detail, inside and out. Systems management on the very complex (and often unreliable) B-29 was a critical function." Zeno, Zeno's Warbird Videos http://zenoswarbirdvideos.com. Seeing this video full screen, plus a lot more on our 'Boeing B-29 Superforts Go to War Vol. 2' DVD. http://bit.ly/SwOsRH Digitally restored video & audio. The Flight Engineer was responsible for everything from an extensive per-flight check, through managing engines and other critical systems in flight to ensuring that all necessary repairs and maintenance were preformed after landing. All aspects of an Engineer's role are shown in detail in a complete mission in this film. Appropriately for the B-29, the flight is far from trouble free, adding an extra dimension of realism. And as an added bonus, the role of the the Engineer is played by Hollywood legend John Payne and the narration is memorably delivered by Ronald Reagan.

Great video! So many more interlocks and safety features in today's engineering. Amazing to see how far we've progressed.

Why is there Asian letting on the control panel? That is very strange. I have restored a b-29 with the yankee air museum and I have never seen Asian lettering on the control
-
so much engineering back in those days now engines are so simple only two pilots required to flight a plane bigger and more powerful than that B-29
-
starring Robert Mitchum!!!

Awesome! Now I think I'll take a nap as I'm worn out, lol. I had to laugh watching the flight engineer smiling and prompting (only when needed) the lieutenant. As somebody who has trained many on machine tools, I recognized myself. People either get it or they don't: there's no in-between. You have to know the machine and understand what's happening.

is the narrator President Reagan?
-
Ronald Reagan!!!
-
In case you have not noticed, RONALD REAGAN is the narrator.

they sure relaxed the flight suits after this film was made.

at 20:55 the tail gun looks like a big one? what was it?
-
Is that generator at 5:00 what caused the fire that destroyed the B29 that had been under the snow for many years?
-
Actor John Payne portraying the flight engineer. Ronald Reagan is doing the main voice over.
-
The pilot is actor James Seay. He played small parts in numerous films for many years.

Didn't the Soviets make an almost complete copy of the B-29 since they didn't have the technology to make such a long range bomber? It put them at a huge disadvantage at the start of the Cold War. Fortunately for them a spy gave them complete blueprints for one.

CO PILOT IS JOHN PAYNE , FILM ACTOR - KNOWN FOR MIRACLE ON 34TH ST. -- HE WAS A PILOT IN US ARMY AIR CORPS DURING 2ND WORLD WAR.
-
One of the narrators sounds like Robert Vaughn.

In early 1945 we had about a thousand B29's on Guam and Tinian flying raids on Japan. If EVERY flight engineer checked EVERY SINGLE THING on his checklists before take-off the Japs would have been sipping a cold beer in Honolulu before the B29's could even take off to bomb Tokyo once. So yes, the Checklists were many and the items checked were quite numerous but if any flight engineer or crew chief tells you they checked every single item, every single sortie they are damned liars. Checklists are very important and some items are critically important but also a lot of it is so they can place "blame" if there are any system failures. CYA...

The flight engineer is a crazy logic guy to maintain the plane!
Now it is replaced by computer though. :P -
