Blue Oyster Cult - The Vigil (1979) [720p HD]

My 17th video in a series I'm working on for some of my favorite songs from the past. It was way past time for a Blue Oyster Cult video! Again, as with most of my other favorite bands, the question was.....for which song? This band has so many great songs that would make great videos! Was going to do "Nosferatu" first, but several videos have been created for that one, considered "Joan Crawford", "Then Came The Last Days of May", "Astronomy" and pretty much everything on Agents of Fortune....but finally went with "The Vigil" from 1979's Mirrors. I always loved the fat sound on this song, the tempo changes, and the lyrics....back in the day it used to be one of my go to songs for testing out my new 8-track and cassette car stereo systems! :-) It still sounds great.....but WHERE IS THE REMASTER FOR THIS Underrated! album?!? [Lyrics] In a purple vision Many thousand years ago I saw the silent stranger Walk the earth alone Twenty-seven faces With their eyes turned to the sky I've got a camera And an airtight alibi I know they're out there We see them coming Faster than the speed of light They greet us in the dead of the night Somewhere, someday, someone They'll be light and sound They'll alight on the ground On which we stand Somewhere, someday, someone Will help us to survive They're gonna show us hell And bring us back alive Well, I'm no poet, but I can't be fooled The lies don't count, the whispers do I hear the whispers on the wind They say the earth has fallen due We run in circles Our days are numbered Every night I look away To the heavens and I pray Come to us Come to us Our lights are dim Our roads are crumbling And we don't know what to do We're sick and tired And dying to meet you 'Cause we bit off more than We can chew

As many here know, this was originally a Patti Smith Lyric called "The Devil Has A Hangnail". The Music for that Demo, is virtually identical to the The Vigil. Buck's wife, Sandy rewrote the Lyrics into the Vigil. "Bit Off More Than He Could Chew" is about all that remained of the Hangnail :-) Always felt this song was a synopsis of the Movie "Contact" written well before the movie came out. Excellent video, BTW

Such an under rated band and song! I have loved this album since it came out and the guitar solos in the track always blow my mind. So SWEET! Thanks for making this video!

BOC is such a creative band, I love metal but they are so much more creative and so outside the cliches of that genre. The Vigil is really like 3 songs in one (Golden Age of Leather is another) The distinct parts, the vocal harmonies and tempo changes are so imaginative.
I saw BOC recently and was very happy to hear that this is part of their set (along with a lot of other rare gems). I didn't know this, but the great lyrics are written by Buck Dharma's wife Sandy Roesser. Pretty certain they are about extraterrestrials but thats only my interpretation.
"I've got a camera--and an airtight alibi" Love it! -
Great job. Go on please.
