But the Sun is tiny compared to the solar system which is tiny compared to the distance to the next star. Oh, did we mention that there are over 100 billion stars in our galaxy (which is about 100,000 light years in diameter) which is one of hundreds of billions of galaxies in just the observable universe (which might be infinite for all we know). Don't feel small. We find it liberating. Your everyday human stresses are nothing compared to this enormity that we are a part of. Enjoy the fact that we get to be part of this vastness! About Khan Academy: Khan Academy offers practice exercises, instructional videos, and a personalized learning dashboard that empower learners to study at their own pace in and outside of the classroom. We tackle math, science, computer programming, history, art history, economics, and more. Our math missions guide learners from kindergarten to calculus using state-of-the-art, adaptive technology that identifies strengths and learning gaps. We've also partnered with institutions like NASA, The Museum of Modern Art, The California Academy of Sciences, and MIT to offer specialized content. For free. For everyone. Forever. #YouCanLearnAnything Subscribe to Khan Academy’s Cosmology & Astronomy channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UChNPnEkW8LYZ5Rwi8_A2-DA?sub_confirmation=1 Subscribe to Khan Academy: https://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=khanacademy

a lot of response here to comments that don't exist anymore :\
-
religion is irrelevant.
-
@vpletap nah he should probably call the entire playlist Geology since the topics are all involved in that syllabus
-
@readmad Could you explain why you feel this way? I respect your opinion --- I"m just curious to understand your reasons. Thanks.
-
lol i love the digression about the political correctness of neanderthals.

@SalsaTiger83 I see.: Animal: a living organism characterized by voluntary movement. Do unicellular fit such a definition? I don't think so,... but it's making me wonder about this guy and what he teaches.... how can one teach with such vague words when defined: so loosely applied I heard of Scientific dictatorship on planet earth but I didn't think it was this screwed up. I'm sure science must have figured out animals did not come before plants & playing w/ words makes it worse..

@simpleejoe Actually the oldest known tree is a clonal variety called the Pando. Its cloned stems occupy over 100 acres of land and weigh an estimated 6000 tonnes, its estimated life of its current present mass is 80,000 years, although it could merely be the suriving part of an organism nearly 1 million years old. There are other examples of plants which are definitely older than 4000 years, but if your sources are young earth creationists, they simpy wont tell you about them.

@LibertyJedi The problem is with the definition of animals and plants. He probably means unicellular organisms colonizing the ground. Probably Prokaryotes came first, and Eukaryotes fed off them or used some form of photosynthesis. Later the "real" plants and algae developed.

@simpleejoe I find great fun in the idea that the bible "evolved". And in fact it did. Church records tell that parts where redacted, omitted or chosen. Also the way the bible has been passed on was people copying it word by word. So basically, the bible has evolved to please the clergy and the ruling class in europe. In fact, Constantin chose Christianity out of hundreds of religions because he thought it would make a wonderful religion to support war and tyranny.
-
3:19 "animals colonize land before plants did", this can't be true, what the hell did the animals eat? the land?
-
@EqualAndFree Well said. Any pro-religion comments I see on Khan Academy videos I mark as spam and encourage others to do the same.
-
@tttybhgf You have to be careful with the timescales. The cambrian explosion still took tens of millions of years.
-
@tttybhgf Where does it say it isn't gradual? When you listen to the video, you'll notice quite the opposite.
-
I hope we evolve into the Navi.
