The Planetary Society and CEO Bill Nye were at the launch of OSIRIS-REx in Florida and share with you the joy and adventure of space exploration. OSIRIS-REx is NASA's asteroid mission that seeks answers to the questions that are central to the human experience: Where did we come from? What is our destiny? Learn more at http://www.planetary.org. The OSIRIS-REx spacecraft is traveling to Bennu, a carbonaceous asteroid near Earth which may contain the earliest history of our solar system. Bennu is also one of the most potentially hazardous asteroids, as it has a relatively high probability of impacting the Earth late in the 22nd century. OSIRIS-REx will determine Bennu’s properties, which will be critical to know in the event of an impact mitigation mission. Finally, asteroids like Bennu contain natural resources such as water, organics, and precious metals. In the future, these asteroids may one day fuel the exploration of the solar system by robotic and manned spacecraft. Bill Nye speech from video: "This was a rocket that was going all the way to another body, way out in deep space. So it was an Atlas V, which is a pretty big rocket to start with. And then strapped to the side of it was a booster. The smoke changed color as the booster was used up. And then it was at twilight! It was at seven in the evening in Florida. It was this beautiful night. The whole thing just had this Hollywood, picture perfect quality. The reason we explore asteroids is to learn more about the beginning of the solar system. Where we all came from. Do you know what we're going to discover when we look at these rocks? Nobody knows! That's why we're doing the mission. To find out more about where we all came from." With the mission to empower the world's citizens to advance space science and exploration, its international membership makes the non-governmental Planetary Society the largest space interest group in the world. Carl Sagan, Bruce Murray and Louis Friedman founded the Planetary Society in 1980. Bill Nye, a longtime member of the Planetary Society's Board, serves as CEO.
