Sputnik 5 was the first spaceflight to send animals into orbit and return them safely back to Earth. On board were two dogs Belka and Strelka, 40 mice and several plants. Launched on August 19, 1960 it paved the way for the first human orbital flight less than eight months later with Vostok 1.

its funny that, everyone is mad at this. They survived, and they arent going to waste a human, due to their importance and they wanted to know if something can LIVE in space, so they done dogs since they are similar to humans, then they go big until Humans can be able to reach space.

Disgraceful! Human pieces of shit that will rott in hell for their cowardly abuse of wonderful innocent animals!

LAIKA NUNCA REGRESO A LA TIERRA PERO BELKA Y STRELKA SI REGRESARON

Belka and Strelka returned home safely and were the first complex organisms to do so. It wasn't in anyone's interest for them to (accidentally) die, so numerous measures were taken to ensure their survival in space: systematic and consistent special training, food supply, toilet solutions, health tracking etc. Not to mention scientific calculations and technology used to ensure a safe flight. And boy, for a long, long time they were (and for many people, still are), the most famous, the most beloved dogs on the planet! They both lived to a ripe old age, lodging at the Institute of Aviation Medicine and travelling all over the country, visiting children's homes, kindergartens etc.

not too sure I understand why they sent them up, obviously not the dogs choice, being a dog lover, I feel quite upset by this, sure must have been lonely for the poor furry guys :-(
